Of course, I planted my little backyard garden on Good Friday. I always love getting everything planted and ready for another growing season.
And now, somehow, here we are nearing the end of summer! The garden has been so good to us this year, and before everything starts winding down, I wanted to capture it here. Here’s how it looked in May!
The two raised beds are still tucked into the same sunny spot in our side yard where we’ve gardened since the boys were little. I love that after all these years, this little corner of our home is still producing flowers and food for our family. Time certainly does fly.
I still have the original front porch railings repurposed back here as a little “fence” around the garden area, with two big rosemary shrubs anchoring either end. Honey added a water line and garden hose a couple of years ago, which has made keeping everything watered SO much easier through the Georgia heat. We also have three evergreen shrubs along the back to give us a little separation from our neighbors.
The location really couldn’t be better. It gets loads of sun, and I can easily pop out from the kitchen or porch to grab whatever I need while cooking.
I use one raised bed primarily for herbs and vegetables and the other for cutting flowers. I am by no stretch of the imagination a gardener, but I continue to learn a little more each year about what works well in this particular spot.
And what works VERY well are zinnias.
The cutting garden has once again been one of my favorite things about summer. The zinnias absolutely took off, and I’ve cut armful after armful to use around the house. They’ve ended up in vases on the kitchen counter, little arrangements on our tables and anywhere else I could find an excuse to put them. I even cut a huge bunch to use for Whit’s senior breakfast, and I loved that something growing right outside our house became part of such a special celebration.
The flowers also keep this entire corner of the yard aflutter with bees and butterflies. We don’t spray our yard for mosquitoes, so along with the pollinators we get to enjoy a plethora of every other flying creature known to Georgia. You win some, you lose some.
On the other side, the vegetable garden has kept us well supplied too. We’ve brought in bowl after bowl of tomatoes throughout the summer, along with plenty of peppers and herbs. There is something so satisfying about walking outside while I’m making dinner and coming back in with ingredients still warm from the sun.

I wouldn’t say I’ve developed a green thumb, but after all these years, I’ve at least figured out a few things that seem willing to grow for me.
As summer winds down, I realize it won’t be too long before I pull everything out and put the beds to rest, but for now, we’re enjoying every last bit of our summer garden.
