I had absolutely no intention of buying a Halloween mahjong set this year. Did I need one? No. Did I have room to store another set of tiles and a mat? Also no. But apparently I was powerless against the spell of Gothic Hour from Mad About Mahj, and I have to admit that it has brought me an unreasonable amount of joy this October!

I have always loved decorating for Halloween, and now that mahjong has become one of my favorite pastimes, I suppose it was only a matter of time before the two collided. What I especially love about this set is that it isn’t overly cutesy or cartoonish. The artwork has a beautiful, moody Victorian gothic feel that fits right in with the rest of my Halloween decor. Think haunted mansions, candlelit libraries, old spell books and a little dark romance. It’s spooky in the prettiest possible way!
The Gothic Hour Mahjong Tiles feature the most wonderful little details, including candelabras, gargoyles, crimson roses and all sorts of mysterious symbols. The tiles themselves have layered black, deep red and parchment-colored edges that make them especially pretty stacked together. Even the dice and shuffle cards coordinate with the theme!

And then there’s the matching Gothic Hour mat, which might be my favorite part of the whole setup. The rich purple background, gothic architecture, antique bronze scrollwork and dramatic florals make it look like something straight out of a haunted Victorian parlor. It is almost too pretty to cover up with tiles!
To finish things off, I added a skeleton hand dice holder from my Halloween collection. It was just the right spooky little touch!

Now, about those acrylic racks from Lucky Daughters. A package showed up at my door a couple of weeks ago, and I had absolutely ZERO recollection of ordering them. I was so surprised that I actually checked the shipping label to make sure they weren’t meant for a neighbor. Nope. My name, my address. Apparently, I had done a little shopping that even I didn’t know about!
I left them in the box for the next couple of weeks, debating whether I should return them or try to resell them. But once I finally put them with the Gothic Hour set, there was no going back. They coordinate so perfectly that I’m convinced they were meant to be. The racks are here to stay!
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a date with the tiles. Witching hour is officially mahjong hour!
Happy Halloween, y’all!
