On My Bedside

Unlike last month where I had to fess up to my vampire addiction, I return with a much more respectful book… Boys Should be Boys: 7 Secrets to Raising Healthy Sons by Meg Meeker.

While most of the book is really just common sense, it always helps me to reground myself in written words.  As a mother of boys, I do not take my role lightly.  Not only do I aim to love, nourish and comfort them, but it is my heart’s true desire to send them off into the world as respectful, kind, generous, smart, God loving, thoughtful and courageous men.  I want them to be amazing husbands and doting fathers, like their own.  And to leave conscious and thoughtful marks on their communities and their world.  Not an easy task, I’m afraid.  But the day God entrusted me with these two rambunctious, precious lives, I knew it was a task I was put on this Earth to do.

The premise of the book is that today’s world doesn’t always value the high-spirited, magical nature of boys and the author asks parents to let boys be boys.  She speaks about (taken from the book cover):

• why rules and boundaries are crucial–and why boys feel lost without them
• how the outdoors is still the best playground, offering the sense of adventure that only Mother Nature can provide
• the essential ways to preserve a boy’s innocence (and help him grow up)
• the pitfalls moms and dads face when talking to their sons
• why moody and rebellious boys are not normal–and how to address such behavior
• how and when the “big” questions in life should be discussed: why he is here, what his purpose is, and why he is important

So that’s it in a nutshell.  This is one I think I’ll find on my bedside again and again.

For now, I’m off to assist in John’s Sunday School class (for the first time!!) and am SO excited!!  After that we’re headed outside to enjoy the gorgeous day…for the rest of the day.  I already have a yummy Sunday Supper of pork chops and field peas cooking in the crock pot, and will be whipping up banana bread cobbler for dessert.  It’s bound to be a GREAT day!!!

xoxo
