Southern Porch + Pinterest Challenge

Weโ€™ve been chit chatting with our fab builder friend S about trading in our worn out deck for a Southern summer-friendly screened in porch for a couple of months now.  And work is FINALLY underway!!!

Hereโ€™s the before all decked out for Independence Dayโ€ฆ

There was nothing really wrong with the deck (I mean, unless you count the sap that would come up through the boards all summer long and stick to my floorsโ€ฆor the railings and stairs that were no where close to meeting code) but a screened porch will be soooo much more fabulous in our sticky mosquito laden Southern summers.

Weโ€™ll be using the foundation of the existing deck and extending it out to where those large, unwieldy and overgrown bushes currently reside.   Here are the deets as they currently stand:

  • Hip style roof in Owens Corning onyx black shingles to match rest of house
  • White 32โ€ railings
  • 10โ€ wrapped columns placed 8โ€™ apart to allow for wide screens and open views
  • A new deck floor โ€“ maybe stained, maybe painted
  • Painted bead board ceiling
  • Brick fireplace!!!!  YAY!!!!!!!!!!

Weโ€™ll flip flop the current arrangement so that the sitting area and fireplace are off the kitchen and the dining area is off of the den.  There are countless projects on my list to pull the space together and I simply cannot wait to start making progress!  Iโ€™ve set up a new Pinterest board to keep track of all of my ideas.  I mean, what did we do before the Pinterest phenomenon?!?!  And hereโ€™s a sneak peek of it all laid out togetherโ€ฆ

Speaking of my new Pinterest board, Iโ€™ve entered into the Ballard Designs Pin It to Win It challenge.  The contest is open until Friday so thereโ€™s still plenty of time to get in on the fun.  One lucky pinner will walk away with $1,000 to spend at Ballards!

Y’all Cross your fingers that I’ll be sharing the final project at the beginning of June!
xoxo

  1. Congrats on the new porch! I have been trying to talk my husband into doing either that or a sunroom for years. Our deck gets full sun all day and is not in the best of shape. I can't wait to see your final results! I just saw that Ballard contest too! How great would that be to win!

  2. Love inspiration board and have one comment – got white fabric for cushions for our lanaii in FL. With black frames is striking to look at BUT not the least bit practical as the wind blows all sorts of dust/pollen etc. all over them. (Think about grinding that in to the fabric.) Leaving towels on the chairs we use the most is tacky lol so last year we had all cushions reupholstered after two yeasrs. Just an expensive thought. Look forward to the finished porch.

  3. Why, oh why…do you work…where you work? You need to be a Southern Interior Designer. Love you work…fresh and airy as always with a touch of ocean breeze. Lauryn G.

  5. Amanda,

This is so exciting! I can't wait to see the results. My grandmom lived on hers all summer long. We have such wonderful memories of the times on the porch. (I live in townhouse so it isn't an option).

As always, everything you picked looks beautiful!

  8. I love your board and you will love your screened porch. We enclosed ours years ago but it's really a sunroom with lots of windows and french doors leading out to the patio/deck. Right now I'm holding out for a pool as we make the last payment on our house May 1st! Yay!

I sent our contractor/builder friend an inspiration pic of an arbor I want built (probably next summer) where our current gazebo is.

I know your space will be as wonderful as the rest of your home…can't wait to see it all finished!
