Y’all, I am just beyond pleased with how this little project turned out. I’m creative but not at all artistic so my stomach was in knots over ruining the whole thing. But, my fears were all for nothing because it really couldn’t have been easier and couldn’t have turned out cuter!! Behold my DIY painted TOMS!!!
Now, I did Disney themed shoes because I adore all things to do with the Mouse. I will say that I think they turned out so easy and cute for me is directly related to the fact that my pattern was so simple. Of course, you can use this tutorial to paint whatever you like on your canvas shoes!! I searched Pinterest for a good step-by-step to no avail. So, here’s how I finally got it done…
1. Gather your supplies. I purchased my TOMS on ebay for $36 (new). Target carries a knock off line and you could really use any sort of canvas shoes with success. You will need shoes, a pencil, a sharpie, acrylic craft paint, a small paint brush and sealer (I used modge podge). If you are like me, you might also need a pattern to go by. I scaled a Mickey head and bow down on Mother’s copier to fit the tops of my shoes. As luck would have it, Mother already had every single thing needed on hand… even the perfect paint colors!
2. Using your pencil (and pattern if desired), trace the outline of your design onto the shoes. I left the hard toe shaped inserts that came in the shoes in place for the painting.
3. Start painting! You will want to do THREE coats of each color, letting each coat dry completely before starting the next. I stuck mine outside to dry between coats and it took no time at all given how hot it was here yesterday. I started with black…
…then did the red.
Since Mother had red glitter paint in her stash, I couldn’t resist putting it to use. After my three coats of plain red were done, I went over the tops of the red areas with two additional coats of the red glitter. It is pretty clear, so you will want to use a solid base coat if you decide to do the glitter.
4. Outline your design, add details with black sharpie. I simply outlined the red part of the bottom of the Mickey and the bow on Minnie.
5. Using a teeny tiny brush, I added the buttons to Mickey’s shorts and the dots to Minnie’s bow.
6. I let everything dry completely over night and then sealed with Modge Podge. Mother had glossy on hand, so that’s what I used. I did a very light coat, carefully brushing it on and being sure not to go outside of my design. I let it dry about 30 minutes and then added a final coat.
With that, you’re done!!
I simply cannot WAIT to wear these!! They are so comfy and will be perfect with all my Disney tees on our next trip late this year. Stay tuned for another Disney paint project happening NOW :-)
xoxo

They turned out great! I'm so excited to do a pair for each of my three girls and myself for our Disney trip this fall! I've been pinning pictures for a while but was too nervous to try it, plus our trip is a surprise so they might be a little suspicious if I start painting Minnie shoes! ;)

Does the mod podge seal them so the paint doesn’t crack?
I don’t wear mine daily but have worn them all over the parks many times and have not had them crack!
