Altar Server

Back in September, John expressed interest in attending the training for altar servers at church.  And, just a few weeks later, he had the honor of serving at his very first mass.  He was SO nervous, which is to be expected.  We arrived early enough to do a talk-through of his responsibilities, but it was the lovely sacristan in charge that ultimately put him at ease.  He first told him a story about how the robes were always so short on him when he was a kid (he was SUPER tall), which made John laugh, and then he told him that every single adult in that church would be so immensely proud of him that they wouldn’t care or notice if he fell flat on his face.  I truly believe this to be the case and I can assure you that I was the proudest one of the lot.

I know it’s gauche and tacky and all sorts of other things, but I took two quick pics during mass.  I couldn’t help myself.  Really!  I thought I was uber discreet until the sweet couple behind us kindly whispered “you must have one up there”.  When I nodded my head they both smiled and said “I don’t know which one, but they are doing great.”  All of a sudden I didn’t feel so silly.

It might have been one of the most beautiful masses I’ve ever attended.  It beats my wedding mass when it was thundering and lightening so loudly that the lights flickered.  And I was so hot that I nearly passed out while kneeling.  HA!

I’m proud of this kid for many, many reasons.  But this one right here made my heart sing.

In other family news, the baby makes his first reconciliation this week and will take his first communion in the spring!!

I hope y’all had a wonderful Sunday.

  1. I’ve done the awkward cell phone pic in church to grab a pic of my J serving in the alter too? Congrats to you all!

  2. Altar serving is a wonderful way to engage kids in the mass and encourage them to be active members of their community. Thank you, John, for your service.

  3. Congratulations, John! What an amazing thing it is, to assist the priest at the Altar. My Sophie is signed up as altar server but hasn’t taken her training yet. It’s such an honor!! Thanks for sharing your photos of such a special Mass.

  4. Absolutely wonderful! Thank you for sharing your excitement. I know your heart is singing. As a Catholic, I’m proud of him too.
