A Star Spangled Fourth {All American Grilled Cheese Bar}

We celebrated the Fourth with an all American Grilled Cheese bar and lawn games, capped off with a wonderful fireworks display on the golf course!!

We had 51 people over for the party and I failed miserably at getting pics.  I did snap this one of the set up with some of the early arrivals that were helping us get ready.  I rented the tables, chairs and table cloths and made the centerpieces.  I shared that on my Insta Stories, but they are just buckets that once lived in John’s nursery filled with annuals that I will use to replace a bunch of spent ones in my pots.

The grilled cheese bar itself is a rendition of Honey’s 40th birthday party.  It was a huge hit back then and is really easy on the hosts so we decided to go that route over our usual low country boil.  I think everyone loved it and we might stick with it for a while!  Again, I didn’t do a great job at pictures, so hop over to Honey’s birthday post to see many more details!!

We pared down the offerings from the original party based on things we remember being popular.  These were the building blocks:

Breads

  • sourdough
  • pumpernickel / rye
  • good old fashioned white

Cheeses

  • goat
  • sharp cheddar
  • american
  • brie
  • pimento
  • fresh mozzarella

Meats

  • turkey
  • ham
  • bacon
  • prosciutto

Toppings

  • red onion
  • tomato
  • mustards (dijon, coarse grained, honey)
  • Pepper Jelly
  • Nutella (dessert)
  • bananas (dessert)
  • butter
  • basil
  • arugula

In addition to soft drinks, sparkling water, beer and wine, I set out an infused water and lemonade.  We also had the fixings for Moscow Mules and Honeysuckle Lemonades.

I swear I was going to walk this morning, but after getting dressed I decided a Krispy Kreme run would be better.  HA!  I picked up a bunch of donuts for dessert and they were EASY and a big hit.  We didn’t have a single donut left and this was only part of them.

In the yard and driveway we had croquet, corn hole, bocce, building blocks, hula hoops and the boys’ new ninja line.  When it got dark, we moved the crew out to the golf course for the fireworks!

Honey and I agree that there isn’t much we love more than having our home filled with people.  The four of us fell in bed exhausted, happy, and thankful for the FREEDOM to be able to gather, celebrate and enjoy nights like this.

I hope that you and yours had a wonderful and safe Fourth.  God bless the USA!!!

  1. The grilled cheese bar is the best casual party idea ever! So glad you had a fun-filled, festive Fourth! xo

  2. What a fun and festive way to celebrate the fourth! Any ideas on how to keep pesky flies and bugs away from such a beautiful outdoor spread?

    1. Hi! I used my bestie’s mesh food covers! She had them at her pool party earlier in the day and offered to bring them. They were fantastic. I’ll find out where she got them. :-)
