Master Bathroom {The Before}

I have the most exciting news to share (for me, at least) ………….  we are FINALLY after NINE long years going to renovate the master bathroom!!!  (If you follow along in Instagram, you already know this from my InstaStories.)

Here’s what we’re starting with…   (photos from 2012)

We’re nothing if not color coordinated here. Navy blue tub, sinks, tile, toilet, even grout – we’ve got it all.

So, the bathroom is hideous both in the looks department and in functionality.  It has caused three leaks in our den (like, cut the walls and ceilings out kind of leaks….), we have no bathtub anymore (had to cut the pipes to that), we have two giant holes in the walls now (due to all of the needed repairs) and I have no hot water in my sink.  I put the project off year after year after year to prioritize other less daunting home projects (mostly outside) and things like traveling.
But, the good news is that once you get past the aesthetics and plumbing issues, it really does have a lot going for it.  It’s crazy spacious for a house built in the sixties.  It’s got a great layout and it has loads of natural light.

My goal is to have a light, bright, traditional and functional space that seamlessly transitions from the rest of the house.   There is an extra closet in John’s room that backs up to the bathroom and we will be taking that space and adding it on.

Wish List

  • Bathroom door
  • Double sinks
  • Linen storage
  • Freestanding tub
  • Shower at least the size of what we have now
  • Separate room for toilet

Project List

  • Lighting
  • Vanity
  • Linen cabinet
  • Sink faucets
  • Mirrors
  • Floor tiles
  • Toilet
  • Fixtures – including towels, toilet paper
  • Shower tile – walls, floor, decorative
  • Shower fixtures
  • Wall decor – pending space for othis
  • Towels
  • Bath rug
  • Freestanding tub and filler
  • Window covering – both decorative and functional
  • Other small decorative / functional items

I’ll share our progress along the way!  Stay tuned!

  1. The fact that “Bathroom door” is the first item on your wish list cracks me up! I just have this mental image of you opening and closing it over and over again like it’s the first door you’ve ever seen in your life. I guess where your bathroom is concerned, it will be! I saw your picks on your instastories, and I found it so ironic that you won’t be getting COMPLETELY away from blue in your bathroom. Excited to follow along with the progress!

    1. Haha! I do love blue and white and it will coordinate with the master bedroom. But hopefully in a much more beautiful way than current. :-) For the door, I keep pinning pictures of french doors with glass. So that’s kind of funny too. I mostly want a door so that when the water is running I can hear the tv, I guess. I’m used to having no privacy around here whatsoever.

  2. You will have a door! I know that makes you so happy!

Knowing how long this has been on your list, I can’t wait to follow along. It will be life changing! xo

  3. Every master bath needs a door! We bought a new construction years ago and the master bath did not have even a door frame. You had to close off the entire master bedroom just to take a shower!! When we moved again, I made sure my bathroom had a door. The first time I closed it I remember thinking it was so luxurious!!!! It’s the little things, you know??!!

  4. I have been waiting for a Mater Bath Remodel as well. Any chance you can share budget numbers? It is so hard to know how much to prepare for this project. I am just thinking $15,000???Any help would be appreciated.

    1. Of course, we got quotes ranging from $23k to $48k. We went with the $23k. We liked him the most, which is good. We do have an extensive project – removing a wall, taking closet space and adding it on, a full gut with all new plumbing, moving the locations of things to make it more functional and look better.

      1. Thanks for sharing. We have a gut job as well. Our House has 2 Masters. The Old Master Bedroom is our Son’s room. The bath is from 1987. We have the garden tub and the little shower . Thinking about doing one big shower. We are lucky that my husband can do th lighting. He has a family business Stokes Lighting Center in Knoxville. Can’t wait to see how your redo turns out. Best of luck!
