Backyard Garden

If you’ve been around for a while, you will know that I almost always plant my backyard garden on Good Friday. I had everything ready to do just that last month, but the weather was horrid so I put it off until Easter Monday.

My roses are doing wonderfully, which is a real miracle since I do nothing to them. The stand in front of a garden “gate” that Honey made for me out of our home’s original wrought iron porch railings.

We moved to raised beds a couple of years ago and it has cut down tremendously on voles and critters getting to the plants.

After ten years of growing herbs and veggies, I have really culled things down to the ones that grow best here and are our favorites to eat. I do bell peppers, squash, jalapenos and a bunch of tomatoes. Our favorite herbs are basil, mint, oregano, parsley, lavender and rosemary.

Honey fashioned the sprinkler system to work with the raised beds last summer. We originally had beds right on top of the straw and the existing sprinkler heads couldn’t reach up this high.

Speaking of gardens, my mother in law was traveling last week and invited me to come cut her peonies. Gosh, they are beauties! I enjoyed them all week long.

As you likely already know, peonies attract ants and can be a real nuisance to bring inside. I turned them upside down in a giant bowl of water for about 10 minutes outside. Then I shook them out and left them in a vase overnight on the table on the driveway. When I brought them inside the next morning, they appeared to be totally ant free.

PS. I got a new coffee table that I need to share soon!

Hope you’re having a great week!
