Cotillion

Three years after John started, I was so excited to send Whit to his first cotillion! He finished up his month of classes last week and really enjoyed it.

The program is four weeks and each week’s theme focuses on a different aspect of manners, respect, and responsibility.   We consistently work on these qualities at home but there is something powerful about learning and honing these skills outside of the home with a group of your peers.

In addition to the lessons about etiquette, they also learn key steps to build a foundation in three different ballroom dances.  Y’all know this is my favorite part! Especially with a little buddy who actually let’s me practice with him at home.

On the last night, the parents are invited to attend and get to take the dance floor with their kids.  It’s funny because I remember this night so vividly with John – I was choking back tears at how old and mature he seemed. Well, there’s never time for tears with Whit – the moment I start acting sappy he lightens the mood. We even ditched the cha cha cha in the last few moments of the last song to speed-floss. Not very cotillion-ish, but very Whit-ish. <3

I truly don’t know how I got so lucky. Just look at my baby!

While John has attended cotillion each year since the fifth grade kickoff, I haven’t mentioned it. Between school and sports and church and cotillion, he had an insane month. I didn’t get a single picture of him dressed up, just for lack of time. I did, however, document his look on “Hippy Night”. For middle school, they dress in proper attire (slacks, coats, ties for boys, dresses and gloves for girls) for the main three nights and the dinner party and then do a theme night in lieu of parent night. They did 50’s and cowboy nights in 6th and 7th grades.

These are the days!

  1. Thank goodness for boy moms sending their boys to cotillion!! My daughter’s was full of girls with very few boys to pair them up with. We start up again in the fall this time with BOTH my girls. It is a precious time.
