Go Raiders! {First Day of Virtual School Breakfast}

The longest summer vacation has come to a close and we kicked off the first day of virtual school with our usual pancake breakfast!! Starting 6th and 9th grade, we have a Junior Raider and Raider in the house. The last time we had the same colors and mascot to work with was in 2nd and 5th grades. I was excited to rally with some school spirit this morning!

After the boys went to bed I got the table ready for breakfast. I dug through my Fourth of July party bin to find every single thing you see here!

While I was piddling around with this, Honey went down to the basement and came back with his high school blanket and letter jacket. When he carried up his things, and memories, he was beaming with pride. Thirty-one years later and we have another WHS freshman in the house!

I used John’s W cup, the “freshman gift”, as a vase and had the white shakers in my stash from a GT white out game.

We had John’s lacrosse mask tucked away to give to him today. Who could have dreamed a face mask would be reason for excitement in 2020?

My chalkboard collection has gotten so much use over the years! I mean, is there a better accessory for a school celebration?!

This morning marked a decade of Honey’s grade level flap jacks. Both of the kids are into turkey bacon lately, of all things. I rounded out the plate with some red and blue fruit.

After breakfast we took the requisite front porch pic. No shoes, bare feet. Virtual school for the foreseeable future. Here they come middle school and high school!

John’s classes started bright and early at 8AM. His first two classes were sketchy – the county site crashed and not much was working correctly. The afternoon turned out pretty flawless. He has a staggeringly long list of homework already.

This one spent his morning lounging around. Middle school started at noon, which was pretty hard to suddenly check in for all bright eyed and bushy tailed. I was so tired by the time I walked in to see him with Elsa in his lap that I just let it go. :-)

With the boys tucked in their work spaces plugging away, this girl was found living her best life.

For my completely honest thoughts on day one, at the end of the day I can say “we made it.” The teachers did an outstanding job, from what I could tell, and both of the boys spoke highly of all. The online system was lackluster and the class pages were all organized differently, a confusing issue which is compounded by having 14 teachers between the two of them. There were technology problems on the county side, but those were mitigated quickly. Even so, I spent the entire day (8 AM to 4:30 PM) problem solving, helping them find passwords, making lunches, downloading PDF readers, printing fill in notes pages, signing google forms, keeping up with two entirely different bell schedules, getting them from class to class when there were breaks (we finally set alarms on their phones), connecting to zoom and the list goes on and on and on. When they were finished, it was finally time to start my work day. As exhausting as it was, I’m extraordinarily thankful that I can be here to help, and that I have flexibility with my work hours. I thought it would be three more years before my boys were in school together again… who would have thought we’d be doing 6th and 9th in the same building?!

If you headed back last week or started today, I hope you had a great kickoff.

  1. High school starts at 8? Ugh. :/ I was hoping during this time they’d follow the science of teenagers nocturnal inclination and let them have a later start.

    All looks good at home school though! Embrace the weirdness of these times ;)

  2. I adore your gift for turning every day into something special. I know it will take some time, but before you know it things will be running along so smoothly! So glad to hear all is going well for the most part! xoxo

  3. It’s incredible the boys are this age! Not a school bus. Real or decorative in sight! 😭😭😭 I’m astounded how involved that all is and never thought about switching classes online. 🤯 Here’s hoping life gets back to normal soon for all to enjoy the magical moments of school and all that it entails. 🍎 Great job, Amanda! 🍎 Your orange dinner has inspired me! 🍊 Jane
