On My Bedside {12 Books in 12 Months: Daisy Jones & The Six}

I’m trucking along with my 12 Books in 12 Months project, a list compiled by YOU to kick off 2023. I have to say, every single one has been such a delight and many are not books that were on my radar. For June I absolutely devoured Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I feel like I’m the last woman on the planet to pick this one up and boy was I missing out. It was a fantastic read. I fell in love with Daisy and the band. I loved reading about life in 60s and 70s. And, at the risk of completely embarrassing myself, I thought it was all real. (face palm) This book is so vividly and brilliantly written that I bought it hook, line and sinker. The moment I read the last word on the last page I googled Daisy. Then The Six. Then I started to get really confused. Turns out, this is just a brilliant piece of fiction. I’m only sharing this mortifying tale to paint the picture of just how good the book is. Read it! I cannot wait to watch the mini series now.

Everyone knows DAISY JONES & THE SIX, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity . . . until now.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock ’n’ roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.

  1. Amanda, I loved this book too. (1) It is fiction, but rumor has it that it’s loosely based on Fleetwood Mac. And (2) you HAVE to see the miniseries on Amazon Prime Video. I read the book first, then watched the series and it is AMAZING. The show makes some changes & takes some liberties (as they always do), but it is so well done. The clothing, hairstyles, etc are so legit for that time period. When I got to the last episode and realized I had to wait for Season Two, I was so disappointed!
