Fifteen (Came Fast!)

I can hardly believe I’m typing these words but my “baby” is 15!

He celebrated with our traditional pancake breakfast this morning…

…with friends last week…

…And, we had a divine family dinner out at Little Sparrow tonight!

Every single day for the last fifteen years this child has brought immeasurable joy and love to our lives.  He’s funny, quirky, smart, honest, sensitive, laid back and independent.   He has a witty, dry sense of humor that is beyond his years. He’s excelling in school and hasn’t been happier learning in years. He works on his golf game by afternoon and practices the cello by evening. At home he helps with any job or task at any time without complaint – and usually without a word at all. He’s a quiet kid. He continues to impress us with his creations in the kitchen. As y’all know, he loves Anna and Elsa with his whole heart. There is no sound like his laughter watching silly pet videos on tic tok. :-) He also logs an insanely ridiculous number of hours playing video games with friends. He is frugal and constantly asks – and then is appalled – at how much things cost.

Whit was my rainbow baby and the thing I wanted more than I ever wanted anything in my life. Fifteen years later and I still well up with tears every time I think about how lucky I am to have him.  The fact that he’s testing out the driver’s seat doesn’t make him any less my baby than he was on this day in 2008!

These two couldn’t be more different and, with every passing year, I love seeing little brother pursue his own interests, friendships, sports and hobbies.

I pray that Whit remains grounded in God’s love, and that he knows that his family loves him wholly and unconditionally.  I pray that he continues to know how special he is in his uniqueness and that he never feels pressure to conform or be anyone other than himself.  I pray that he is courteous and chivalrous.  I pray that he realizes you only need one or two good friends, as opposed to a wide circle of acquaintances as he navigates the teens and every year beyond. I pray these dear friends are warm, true, trustworthy and respectful, and that Whit embodies the same qualities in return. I pray that he will value hard work and see the value he brings to every table. And, I pray that he continues to be uninhibited in his happiness and know true joy.

Happy birthday precious son. I love you more than you could ever imagine.

  1. Whit seems like a great guy! I’m glad you want him to know that a few good friends are all that he needs in life. I think the high school years can be very stressful and a close buddy or two is far better than 500 Facebook friends. His birthday gathering at home was just perfect!

  2. Happy “15th” Birthday Whit! I can hardly believe I am typing that….lol. Just to let you know my mom called today to ask me to bring one thing to Christmas dinner…….your maple cheesecake! It was a big hit when I first made it a couple of years ago and now everyone requests it over and over so that a big compliment to your culinary skills. Hope you had a wonderful birthday celebrating with your family and friends.

  3. oh Amanda! this is so sweet! can’t believe how big Whit is getting! I’ve been reading your blog since they were little! ive really enjoyed seeing the food recipes that you and Whit make together and it inspires me to make them myself! :) happy birthday to him! also what lovely advice you give to your sons! I def wish someone had taught me those things when I was younger!

  4. Happy 15th, Whit!!! You are an impressive young man and your curiosity is beyond measure. It’s interesting to follow your adventures and willingness to learn so many things and your dear love for animals is admirable. May you keep moving onward and upward, holding God in your heart and decisions. Have a SPECTACULAR year ahead! Chip & Dale forever! 🐿🐿 Jane ~ San Diego 🌴
