A Final Goodbye

Last Saturday, a cold, gray, blustery winter day in Georgia, we laid to rest our friend John. Every seat in every pew was taken by people who loved John and had been touched by his friendship. He was friend to all, the ultimate social chair and a beloved husband, father, son and brother.

Friday night we hosted a gathering of friends old and new. Guests from Honey and John’s middle school friends, high school crew, Georgia Tech, SAE fraternity, Denver and beyond piled in. We shared stories and anecdotes, laughed, cried, ate and enjoyed a few drinks. Despite the circumstances, it felt good. This seemed especially true for the men who maybe didn’t all know quite how to grieve such a tremendous loss in their circle.

After a beautiful service on Saturday morning, we adjourned to a local taco restaurant that his family had rented out. Again, there were tears, but mostly stories and hugs and camaraderie.

When we were kicked out so they could open for dinner at 5PM, a mere 5.5 hours after we arrived, we adjourned to a local dive bar.

John would have loved it. He would have loved the Star Wars music and spicy margs at the cantina and that the vending machine at the bar sold everything from dog treats to cigarettes. Most of all, he would have LOVED seeing all of his people together.

It is still hard to believe he is gone. Rest in peace.

  1. I am so sorry for the loss of your dear friend John. It sounds like it was a wonderful tribute to him with so many of his long-time friends in attendance. Sadly, we had to attend a funeral service on the same rainy, blustery Saturday as you. Our former long-time neighbors lost their beautiful 18-year-old daughter in a tragic accident. The funeral home was full capacity with family, friends, former coaches and teachers. Her parents and siblings all spoke, and they emphasized how strong her faith was and it was one of the most beautiful services I think I have ever attended.

    1. I’m so sorry. Our community just lost 2 teens in a car accident – 3 more in critical condition. My heart goes out to you. <3
