Celebrating the Class of 2024 {My Super Senior}

Every time I’m asked if I am sad about John’s impending graduation, I truthfully reply that I cannot be sad when he is so happy. As a mother, I find no joy greater than sharing in the happiness of my children. At the start of senior year John went through the surprisingly rigorous application process of becoming a member of the Super Senior Club.

Made up of the most spirited students in the Senior class, this club leads WHS in Raider Pride. The few selected after the application and interview process showed a record of exemplary school spirit for their entire high school career, a flawless academic and behavioral record, and were well known for being positive, enthusiastic, fun and encouraging to all who walk the halls of WHS.

John first laid eyes on the Raider Boys when he was a toddler, being more interested in the boys with painted chests at the football game than the actual players. It was pretty amazing to sit back and watch this little dream come true for him fifteen years later. And, on top of that, he was selected as VP of the club!

Meeting once a week during football season, the Super Seniors chose the “themes” for football games, made signs to hang up around the school, participated in spirit activities and educated the freshmen on WHS spirit traditions.

During games, they “painted up”, took the front row of the student section and quickly led their peers to what was coined “the best student section in the state.”

Every time the Raiders made a touchdown, the Raider Boys stormed the field and did one pushup per point in the game. The Raiders had an amazing, high scoring season and there were many games where the kids were doing upwards of 250 pushups a night.

We had some amazing wins this season…

… and the kids even got to cheer the team on in the state championship!

They were incredibly creative in their spirit activities, hosting their own ESPN Game Day one morning before school. It was approximated that 1,000 students arrived early that day for the festivities.

ESPN got wind of it and Harry Lyles showed up the next week!

Sharing in their spirit and happiness each and every week, in 100+ degree temps, rain and on frigid nights. For every home game and away game and pep rally and in between. It was a JOY to see kids being kids, to see their faces lit up with nothing but happiness.

Let’s go Raiders! What a season!
