Two years ago, I shared how important it is to have certain legal documents in place once your child turns eighteen. Now here we are again… John is nineteen, which in Alabama means he’s officially reached the age of majority. This milestone is a perfect reminder: if your child is about to cross this threshold, its time forms in place.
When a child turns eighteen, you may no longer have automatic access to their medical records, be able to speak with their doctors, or step in to help with financial matters even in an emergency. While they’ll always be your child, in the eyes of the law, they are now an adult.

Just like we did when he turned eighteen, we used Mama Bear Legal Forms to create John’s Young Adult Power of Attorney. Already having Georgia complete, this time was just for the state of Alabama. The process took about ten minutes and was covered with the original cost when we paid for Georgia (I have a referral link for you!), and included:
- Health Power of Attorney documents
- Finance Power of Attorney documents
- HIPAA Release & FERPA Waiver
- Free documents for a second state (if attending college out of state)
- Free app for scanning & storing forms

It couldn’t have been easier – no special paperwork needed beyond what we already knew by heart. We created the forms together, printed them, and met with our notary neighbor to sign. While notarization isn’t required, it’s worth the extra step. We then scanned them into the free app so they’re always at our fingertips.

If your teen is approaching adulthood, this is one of those “hidden” parenting to-dos that can make a world of difference in an emergency. If you have other tips for parents of new young adults, please share them in the comments!
I pray we never need to use these, but the peace of mind is worth every bit of the small investment in time and money.
