Hello, 2026!

With both boys having plans on the evening of January 1, we did something we’ve never done before in twenty-three years: we postponed our annual New Year’s Day feast. And so, for today’s normal installment of Sunday Supper here on the blog, I’m going to recap our evening and share the recipes.

I won’t lie. I felt a little superstitious about it. For as long as I can remember, we’ve gathered around the table on January 1 with pork, greens, cornbread and champagne to welcome the year ahead. Traditions matter to me. But all three of the guys assured me, with complete confidence, that “it will be fine.” And honestly? It was.

With just the two of us at home that night, Honey and I leaned into the quiet, as we’ve found ourselves doing more and more in this season of life. Football played in the background, an episode (or two) of Emily in Paris filled the screen, and we ended the evening with a pop into the hot tub.

On January 2, we reconvened around the table for our feast. Honey offered our blessing and John chose a toast from our Rising to the Occasion book. As always, each of us also shared a personal toast for the year ahead, guided by whichever glass we happened to draw from the millennium set. It’s a tradition I treasure and one we’ve done since they could hold a glass.

We talked about what we loved most about 2025 and what we’re most excited about in the year ahead. Unanimously, our favorite memories from the past year were our summer trips to the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica, along with celebrating Honey’s 50th birthday. Looking forward, I’m excited to celebrate my own 50th this year. Whit is gearing up to begin his senior year in the fall, which feels both exciting and a little heartbreaking. John is hopeful about landing a summer internship, which also feels exciting and a little heartbreaking. And Honey is already dreaming about another Disney cruise.

Our menu was the same one we return to every year: pork, Hoppin’ John, greens, cornbread, pecan pie, sweet tea, champagne and sparkling grape juice. It’s a simple meal by most standards, but one we love and one that feels exactly right for welcoming a new year.

Our evening ended with game night and hot chocolate in the basement… as it has more nights than not this break.

Turns out, the date mattered far less than the people around the table. And that feels like a pretty good way to step into a brand new year.

  1. How true that the people are more important than the date. I’m glad you got to have your New Years celebration with the boys, albeit late. Your table is gorgeous. I love the disco balls. I hope your New Year is great, looks like it’s off to a good start.
