Homemade Hot Chocolate

I’ve toyed around with so many hot chocolate recipes over the years and finally found the one that will end the quest! It is incredibly easy and so delicious. We enjoyed during our snow day last week and already have a batch made up for the frigid temps headed our way.

Homemade Hot Chocolate

  • 2.5 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups half and half
  • 4 oz semi sweet chocolate chips (i like ghiradelli)
  • 4 oz milk chocolate chips
  • 1 T sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp instant coffee or coffee powder
  • homemade whipped cream

Heat the milk and half and half in a large saucepan over medium heat until just below the simmering point. Remove pan from heat and whisk in chocolates, sugar, vanilla and coffee powder.

Homemade Whipped Cream

  • 1 c cold heavy cream
  • 1 T sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Whip the cream in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment. When it starts to thicken, add the sugar and vanilla and continue to beat until firm peaks have formed.

After making the hot chocolate, I pour it in a pitcher and keep it in the fridge. Then, we heat it up by the glass on demand in this frother. It is the most delicious cup of cocoa you’ll have! The whisk inside is made for chocolate pieces and we love that it heats the hot chocolate to a temp where you can enjoy it right away (you can set the temp). You wash the pitcher and whisk in the dishwasher.

I have a number of chocolate recipes that call for coffee and I keep a box of this in my pantry for baking.

I use this Happy Everything! attachment from Christmas all the way through Valentine’s day.

Wishing you a fun weekend. Stay warm!

  1. I never thought to refrigerate a pitcher of hot chocolate.

Since the short lived Chantico Starbuck’s had 20 years ago I’ve been on a quest to replicate. Will try yours.

A demi tasse of hot chocolate after a meal. Just what is needed to signal the brain we are done eating lol
