Our Winter Weather Weekend in Atlanta

Going into this weekend, we were told to prepare for a “crippling” winter storm that would likely leave us without power and creature comforts for at least three days. I’ll be honest. I meal planned… not emergency planned…. and made sure all my clients would be taken care of in the coming days. But as Friday rolled around, the ladies in my local Facebook group had me second guessing everything. We had no firewood. No generator. No battery-powered lanterns. No camp stove.

But we did have a fridge full of ingredients for chicken pot pie, Mississippi roast, from-scratch brownies, muffins, cinnamon rolls, and all the cozy comfort food you could ever want. Which, of course, all require power. We were really going to be in a world of hurt if the forecasters were right.

Here are links to the things we enjoyed:

By Friday afternoon we were told to be wherever we needed to be for the next three days by 5:00 PM. So we hunkered down, glued to the weather apps, phones tethered to the wall so batteries wouldn’t drain, and fully braced for impact.

Saturday morning I cautiously peeked out the window expecting a winter wonderland. The trees had a light coating of ice, but streets, sidewalks, and the driveway were completely clear. We were told not to let our guard down, so we didn’t. But the sun came out, and the whole thing felt a little surreal.

Sunday morning I peeked again. Nothing. Even the light ice had melted away. We watched Netflix. The boys watched sports. There were naps, coffee refills and lots of “what should we eat next?” conversations. I changed from jammies into clean jammies and barely ran a brush through my hair.

School had already been canceled for Monday, so in the end we found ourselves with 3.5 unexpected days of cozy winter bliss. And I feel incredibly grateful for how it all turned out.

I know not everyone across the country was so fortunate, and in particular I’ve had all of our friends at Ole Miss on the mind. I was encouraged to hear from so many clients over the past couple of days that their local impacts were overstated and all is well. Sometimes the best outcome really is a quiet one.

Let me know how your town fared…

  1. We dodged a bullet in most of Virginia as well. We were being warned days in advance about crippling freezing rain that would result in massive power outages in our area. We had our generator ready to go with a full tank of gas, flashlights and lanterns, extra blankets, food and water and you name it. Every meteorologist in our area was all in agreement that the models were indicating we were going to get freezing rain after the snow and sleet. However, the last surface layer temperature stayed cold enough that it never turned into freezing rain but stayed sleet and as a result hardly anyone lost power. Answered prayers! We were truly fortunate because so many other states such as TN & MS were hard hit and I feel so sorry for those poor folks who many are still without power.

  2. Your chicken pot pie looks delicious. I always “cheat” and buy them from Paul’s Pot Pies on the Marietta Square. If you’ve never picked up from there, give it a try. But yours looks fantastic and I’d love to know whose recipe you use. You haven’t steered me wrong on a recipe yet!

  3. My town in Ontario was fine, about 6 inches of snow. I know a city called Minneapolis and it’s
citizens didn’t fare very well though.

  4. Here in southern New England we got the predicted 12–18 inches which the forecasters had been warning of for several days. It snowed from early on Sunday into early Monday. And then on Monday night we picked up a couple of more inches. No strong winds and it was a light, powdery snow which meant we didn’t lose power, thankfully. School was out for two days though as plows initially had trouble keeping up with the rate of snowfall. Temps got into the teens during daytime and we hit a balmy high of twenty five today. No end in sight with the bitter cold so this snow is going nowhere. ⛄️
