Celebrating the Class of 2027 {College Tours: Stop Two, Athens}

Stop number two on Whit’s college tour journey took us to University of Georgia. And spoiler alert… he really liked it.

Since our visit to Tennessee, Whit’s interests have shifted a bit. While he originally thought electrical engineering was likely the path, he’s now leaning more toward general engineering with the possibility of pairing it with business somewhere down the road. The specifics are still very much to be determined, which feels accurate at seventeen. :-) What he does know is that he wants a large university in the South within a reasonable driving distance from home that houses a school of engineering. UGA checks those boxes.

Funny enough, this was only my second time ever visiting Athens. The first was years ago for a dear friend’s wedding, so this was really my first opportunity to actually experience the university itself.

For this trip, we only did the engineering school tour. We figured if Whit left feeling like he could see himself there, we’d return another time for the full campus tour. Well… I think it’s safe to say we’ll be back.

As Georgia Tech people and engineers ourselves, Honey and I certainly had thoughts😂 but like a good little lady, I’ll politely keep most of those to myself. Because ultimately, this process is not about us. It’s about Whit. And what mattered most to me was hearing him say he could genuinely see himself there. After having done this process once (disclaimer: I know I’m no expert), I think that’s one of the biggest indicators that a school deserves serious consideration. And truthfully, we could see him there too.

One thing we especially loved learning about was UGA’s Double Dawgs program, which allows students to earn both undergraduate and master’s degrees in five years. With the number of AP credits Whit should enter college with, there’s likely flexibility to accelerate that, though personally, I’m not advocating to shorten the college experience.

Another huge plus for Whit was the proximity to home. I think he really liked seeing firsthand that Athens is an easy day trip from Atlanta. There and back comfortably in one day feels very manageable, which matters more than I originally realized it might during this process.

We also received SO many questions afterward about how Honey and I feel as Georgia Tech fans potentially sending our son to UGA. I’ll put it here in black and white: total non-issue. We would be absolutely thrilled for him and would proudly wear the red and black right alongside him… as I already did that day.

Where do we draw the line? Barking. That’s a hard stop.

This whole college tour season has been such a fun and eye-opening experience already. Watching Whit slowly figure out what feels right for him has been really special, and I’m grateful we get to walk through it alongside him.

Next stop… Auburn!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. UGA is pop-u-lar. Heard campus is gorgeous- one of most remarkable. Maybe why 8 girls from 2026 MD hs class heading down!

    Tours are great way to get time together! Whit seems set self up to have many options 😀

  2. I am an Auburn graduate who stayed in Auburn and have raised my family there. I know your other son is at Auburn, but I can tell you if your other son isn’t interested in Greek life Auburn is great! Auburn is a place that has so much to offer. They also offer the accelerated bachelor to master program where you get a masters in 5 years. Also have him look into the residential learning community for engineering students.

  3. Thank you for sharing your college visits! I’m looking forward to hearing of Whit’s decision next year!
