Last spring, we wrapped up our college visits with a stop at Georgia Tech, Honey’s and my alma mater.
We’ve been on campus countless times over the past thirty years, but if I’m being honest, most of those visits revolved around the baseball field, football games or the fraternity house. It was fun to finally explore the rest of campus and see how much it has changed. It’s absolutely beautiful.
I will admit I thought the campus tour left a lot to be desired. Maybe I’m a harsher critic because I know firsthand what an incredible school Georgia Tech is, but I walked away wishing they had done a better job showcasing everything it has to offer.
Thankfully, my opinion isn’t the one that matters. Whit really enjoyed it, and that’s what counts.
He’ll begin submitting college applications soon, and then we’ll wait and see where the process leads. This experience already feels very different from John’s, which was wonderfully straightforward. Auburn was always his first choice, and based on his grades and test scores, we felt confident he had a strong chance of being admitted. He applied early, was accepted by mid-October and that was that.
Whit’s path will likely be a little less predictable, and that’s okay. As decisions begin rolling in, we’ll probably plan a few more campus visits in the spring before making any final decisions.
One thing John’s graduating class taught me is that it always seems to work out. Not every student ended up where they thought they would as a high school senior, but by sophomore year, every one of them seemed to have found exactly where they belonged.
That’s my prayer for Whit too. I hope he finds the school that’s the right fit for him, wherever that may be.

It sure makes senior year a lot easier with ED & the accepted student is pumped.
So great that so many top notch schools w/in a short radius of you.
It has been my observation as well, that by sophomore year boys have figured it out.
And some have a very circuitous route to independence (leave 4 year program, work, take classes etc) but most of them get there!
