It’s August, and you know what that means here in Georgia: Back to school!
Around here, that also means it’s time to kick off senior year, and I couldn’t let the occasion pass without giving our front door a little celebration of its own.
A few weeks ago, I pulled out this graduation cap door hanger that I originally made for John’s senior year. Rather than starting from scratch, I gave it a little refresh for the Class of 2027.
The original hanger came from Craft Kraze on Etsy. She typically personalizes them with your school colors, name and graduation year, but I intentionally ordered a more generic version back in 2024, hoping I’d be able to use it again for both boys. Thankfully, that plan worked perfectly!
I carefully peeled off John’s name, school logo and graduation year, then used my Cricut to cut Whit’s name, school logo and “Class of 2027” from removable adhesive vinyl. A few fresh ribbons in his school colors were the finishing touch, and just like that, it was ready for another senior year.
Of course, I couldn’t stop there. The loyal dog statues standing watch by our front door also received matching ribbons. They’ve become part of every holiday and celebration around here, and senior year certainly deserves one!
I also made one little change this year that tugged at my heartstrings. The yellow school bus door hanger that has welcomed our boys home since John started kindergarten fifteen years ago has officially been retired from the front door. I couldn’t quite part with it, though, so it now hangs on our friends’ entrance by the garage. It seemed like the perfect place to let it continue greeting family and friends while making room for this new season of life.
Speaking of ribbons, one little tip… before John’s freshman year, I ordered large spools of ribbon in his school colors from Amazon. They’ve been one of the best little purchases I’ve made. Over the years I’ve used them for parties, gifts, front door decor, teacher treats and countless school celebrations. I did the very same thing when Whit started high school, and I’m so glad I did.

I still can’t quite believe we’re here.
It feels like just yesterday I was hanging this very same door hanger for John’s senior year, and now it’s Whit’s turn. If I’ve learned anything from walking this road once already, it’s to soak up every moment. The breakfasts, football games, dances, golf matches, college visits, celebrations and even the ordinary Tuesday afternoon Crispy Coke Zeros all become memories far sooner than you think.
Here’s to the Class of 2027.
