Must see TV

I swear, all I want to do after the hubbub of the holidays and before the first warm days of spring is to hunker down under blankets in front of the TV.

Like many of you (as I gather from Instagram), I’m positively giddy about the return of Downton.  I love that Edith is coming into her own but worry about Lord G.  Daisy and Mr Carson are driving my crazy.  And I still adore the Dowager.  I am in a sort of denial that it’s the last season.  Sigh.

Also on PBS, I’m counting down to the series premier of Mercy Street.  (Based on real events, Mercy Street goes beyond the front lines of the Civil War and into the chaotic world of the Mansion House Hospital in Union-occupied Alexandria, Virginia.)  It starts 1/17!

I’m currently in the throes of Making a Murderer on Netflix.  I don’t have an opinion yet.  If you aren’t watching, give it a go.  It’s good but I might be in the small slice of America that doesn’t LOVE it.  I honestly find it quite sad.  As a total aside, my very favorite true crime story is that of Adnan Syed.  You can find out more on my post about podcasts here!

As far as my regular shows, I’m catching up on some and waiting on others to come back.  These are my faves…

Vampire Diaries – comes back late this month.  I can’t stop won’t stop my young adult shows.

Pretty Little Liars – the girls have hit the five-year fast forward button so now it’s not so odd that I love this show.  Oh wait… yes it is.

Reign – rounding out my teen drama trio, this show actually got me to obsessively google and learn all about the real Queen Mary.  That’s pretty impressive for the girl that nearly failed history in college.

Once Upon a Time – I watch this one with John now.  He thinks he’s a big kid and I love any excuse to snuggle with him in my bed once a week.

Stitchers – the other show I watch with John.  We blew through season 1 and loved it!  It seems it’s been renewed and we are both looking forward to it.

How to Get Away with Murder – this one is back next month.  A rare show Honey and I both enjoy!

Speaking of Honey and TV, I have asked him to write a little post for y’all about cutting the cord on cable and how he has us set up to watch all these shows.  Stay tuned!

And, before I get a bunch of questions about when I have time to watch TV, here it is… I binge watch TV just like I binge read.  When the urge strikes, I stay up late and watch a whole bunch.  I’m very rarely current on any show (other than Downton and Once Upon a Time since I watch that with John).  I usually do one season of one show at a time.  Sometimes it takes a week and sometimes it takes months to get through.

Now, what are y’all watching????  (As if I need one more thing to add to the lineup.)

xoxo

  1. I will have to set my DVR for Mercy Street, that sounds really good!
(Somehow I’ve never been able to catch it &) I WANT to watch Downton! I’m looking forward to starting that series & binge watching soon!
I’ve been enjoying The Good Wife (must start from the beginning), The Affair (very racy, but the storyline is crazy brilliant), Fixer Upper on HGTV, The Goldbergs with my kids (hi-larious) & Blackish (also, pretty funny).

  2. I guess I am in denial about Downton as well Amanda. IT is my favorite show. Being an old nurse, Call the Midwife would probably be second on PBS. I will be interested to see your husband’s post as My Techie is retiring at the end of the year and we are talking about more affordable tv. His big need is for ESPN….can’t miss his college football and basketball. As to my favorites on TV, it seems there are less and less. We watch Jeopardy every night! Big Bang Theory would be my favorite network show and Project Runway on Lifetime is another favorite. And can I just admit I love CMT’s Making of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders????My guilty pleasure.lol

  3. Ok, here goes – the only shows I’m dedicated to are Grey’s, Scandal, & How to Get Away With Murder. Grey’s is slipping fast, though and while I love Scandal, like really REALLY love it, there are some things in the show that kinda make me uncomfortable. Well, that goes for ABC in general – but this isn’t a politics discussion, is it?

So – I’m hooked on the Adnan Syed story too, and am awaiting updates from Undisclosed as the case goes forward next month. And I’m recently addicted to The Walking Dead (good grief) and I’m watching it from the beginning.

    Happy Wednesday! xo

  4. Once Upon a Time is the show I watch with my kids (ages 12 and 13) too. It’s a great mix of fairy tale and big kid drama. I’m looking forward to the cord-cutting post. Our Directv contract is up in May, and we are planning to cut the cord. I love thinking of all that money we will be saving!

  5. I haven’t heard of Mercy Street but definitely want to check that out. Right now, to give myself some motivation to get on the treadmill, I’m re-watching all the seasons of Friday Night Lights. It’s seriously one of the best shows EVER (and I hate football but still love the show).

  6. I agree with you on Making a Murderer. It makes me very sad. My must-see TV for me right now is Madam Secretary – SO good! And also The Blacklist and Mysteries of Laura. My husband and I are looking forward to the new season of House of Cards on Netflix!!

  7. Parenthood and Friday Night Lights were my favorite tv binges of all time. Amazing. Still obsessed with the characters. Working my way through Gilmore Girls now…I’d never watched it when it was on tv!

  8. Cannot wait for Honey’s post! We are in the midst of planning to cut the cable. I would love more insight on your process.

  9. Highly recommend “Moone Boy” It’s kind of like an Irish Modern Family, Malcolm in the Middle type show. Quite hilarious and pretty family friendly.

  10. I thought I was the only one who still watched Vampire Diaries!!! LOL! Also don’t forget to check out War & Peace on Lifetime, it stars Lilly James and starts this Monday! I’m suffering from withdrawal from Downton already – Binge watched Season 1-5 over the holidays!

  11. I love your blog! But Ooh, these ads in the middle are killing me… I do not like the blogs that have done this. When you scroll on your phone, you click on the ad and they make your content hard to read. It’s also hard to tell your photos from ads. I guess it’s not fair to ask people to blog for free but if there is a different format for ads, it is so much less annoying to the reader.

  12. Blacklist and The Following are excellent. Paradise is sooo good also, though I am desperately waiting Season 3 (one of the few downfalls of Netflix) also *love* Velvet and, yes!, it has spanish subtitles!!! lol, but it is soooo good! We cut the cable cord when we moved into this house three and a half years ago and don’t miss it! we have an antenna on the main TV for news and some sports, my husband got a miracast for every other football game, and when I miss my kitchen tv, I’ll just bring my laptop and watch the peoples court on youtube! Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

  13. I am obsessed with “Downton” as well, and also heartbroken that it is the last season. I’m really looking forward to starting “Mercy Street” too. It seems like it will be right up my alley. My hubby and I just finished watching all six seasons of “Parenthood” and it was phenomenal. It gave the two of us so much to talk about together- have you seen it yet?

  14. I am so sorry that Downton Abby will end this year – I love that show. I am looking forward to the new one this Sunday and I am sure that it also be good.
I like the detectives shows and at least one day a week I beige on my shows. I tape a lot of them as they come on at the same time.

Have a great rest of the week.
    Mary

  15. Try Younger on TV land….it’s great and second season premier was last night!! The ONLY show my hubby and I watch together is Blindspot on NBC….it’s another good one :)
    love your blog!!

  16. What great recommendations- many I have seen.

We have enjoyed on Netflix (even though the storyline gets ‘strong’/adult)

    The Killing
    Broadchurch

    and we really enjoyed Longmire.

    I binge watch too!

    Laura
    WSP

  17. I am excited to read Honey’s post….esp. if he includes how to watch sports without cable. My hubby is a die hard sports fan and well, so am I!

  18. If you still haven’t watched Outlander you must!! Season 1 is on dvd, Amazon video or Apple. I was afraid it wouldn’t measure up to the books but it is fantastic.

  19. Downton and Reign for sure. But my hubby and I like to watch Turn – Revolutionary War spies and love stories, and The Americans – Cold War spies and not something to watch with young kiddos around. As for the young adult shows, I bet you would love Hart of Dixie (if you haven’t already seen it). It’s set in Alabama and is a CW show which you obviously enjoy. I was very sad when it was discontinued, but all seasons should be on Netflix.

  20. How timely- John and I want to ditch cable, and have been weighing the options. Can’t wait to see your plan.
I agree, Making A Murderer was sad.
Around here, we’ve been working our way through Mad Men; we also love Orange is the New Black, Southern Hospitality, Million Dollar Listing (NYC) and a couple of the Housewives franchises, but most of those shows haven’t been on in quite some time. We also watch Jeopardy and Family Feud around dinner time, and/or HGTV.
