Celebrating Christmas 2022 {The “Do” Gift: BuHi Family Outing}

The most anticipated gift for my boys every Christmas is the “do” present. Over the years, this has been everything from a vacation to show tickets to a sporting event. This year, they received a family outing to explore Buford Highway.

I’m confident all Atlantans know of Buford Highway, and it has been a destination Honey and I have frequented since our college days. BuHi is so much more than a highway…. it is a community home to over a thousand immigrant-owned businesses representing more than twenty nations. It is also home to some of the most varied and delicious cuisines that we feel fortunate to have easy access to!

Treat Your Feet

Our evening started with hour long foot massages at Treat Your Feet. I’ve enjoyed this with girlfriends on occasion previously, and it is one of the more well-known establishments on BuHi. The boys had never experienced such a thing and were a little timid – with a lot of questions – going in.

At the start, I was laying there in my chair and Whit whispers “Mom… do I take off my shoes?” “Yes, please do”. Next “Mom… has it started?” “No, son. Is anyone rubbing your feet?” A few minutes later “Mom… what are you doing now?” “I’m laying here with my eyes closed relaxing, son.” Once it did actually start, he was happy as a clam, snuggled under his blanket and didn’t make a peep. :-)

Ultimately, we all left happy and relaxed and they had nothing but great things to say! We talked for the rest of the night about hot stones, Thai sticks and how amazing a good shoulder rub feels. It was so much fun to do this with them and an experience we will all remember!!

Hae Woon Dae

Our next stop was Hae Woon Dae for Korean barbecue. It came recommended to me by a dear friend and foodie, but I was a little nervous when we walked it and it was completely empty. Needless to say, it all turned out absolutely delicious and perfectly.

None of us had ever enjoyed Korean barbecue and they guided us through the whole process. My boys are willing to try anything and our waitress just ate that up – she loved it! At the advice of my girlfriend, we started with dumplings and also did a few soups, seafood scallion pancakes and two different beef options. Not a bite of anything was left! Our favorite memory from this part of the meal was when our waitress showed us how to roll up meat, rice, sauce and toppings in a lettuce leaf, looked at Honey and said “open your mouth”. He immediately did so and before we knew it she was putting it in his mouth. :-)

White Windmill Bakery

Our final stop of the evening was White Windmill – a Korean bakery – for dessert. Oh MY – everything in here was sooo tempting. We ended up choosing three different things – none of which we were really sure of what it was. Everything was absolutely delicious.

Overall, it was such a wonderful evening together in a fantastic location right in our back yard. The saying “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” holds true for my guys. Whit has already stated his birthday party next year will be at Hae Woon Dae. John said he needs to go back WAY before his next birthday. Perhaps this will become an annual tradition. There are SO many places to choose from on BuHi!!
