12 Books in 12 Months {Lessons in Chemistry}

Well folks, it is time to wrap up my 12 Books in 12 Months review for 2023. The project came to a conclusion with Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. This one was laugh out loud funny and entirely entertaining to me. I very much enjoyed the quirky Elizabeth Zott and her shenanigans and, being a woman that loves science, I felt the utmost respect for her tenacity and diligence.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

But like science, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show Supper at Six. Elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. But as her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo.

Laugh-out-loud funny, shrewdly observant, and studded with a dazzling cast of supporting characters, Lessons in Chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist.

12 Books in 12 Months

See the list here:

Now that I’ve read all 12 on the list, I thought I’d share my top 3:

  1. Daisy Jones & The SixJune
  2. Remarkably Bright CreaturesMarch
  3. The Bronze HorsemanNovember

I don’t think I’ll repeat this project in 2024. My goal, instead, is to make it through my to-be-read stack on my bedside table. I’m currently reading Fourth Wing and CANNOT PUT IT DOWN. What’s on your bedside?

  1. I just this very minute finished the book, West With Giraffes, by Lynda Rutledge. It was hard to put down. Not my usual kind of book, but what an adventure! Anyone who has loved an animal will love this book. And most likely will love giraffes after traveling across the country with them on a wild, heart-racing adventure from New York City to San Diego, California.
    Love, Marme

  2. Was surprised how much I liked “Extraordinary Bright Creatures” given the plot description. Such a sweet story!!

    I recommend “Tomorrow Tomorrow and Tomorrow” and “The Late Comer”
