A Book Full of Mountains and Memories

As the boys have gotten older, the “Read” gift in our four gift tradition has definitely become the hardest to choose. When they were little, it was easy. A new installment in a favorite series, something seasonal and fun, or something silly with a little potty humor. Now I want it to be thoughtful and meaningful and still something they genuinely want. That is a tall order for my two who never fell in love with reading for fun.

I thought I would share Whit’s 2025 “Read” gift because this one felt like a home run.

I spotted this book in a local boutique and immediately knew it was perfect for him:
Fifty Places to Ski & Snowboard Before You Die

It is a beautiful coffee table book filled with iconic ski destinations from around the world, and it felt like such a fitting nod to his love of skiing.

As always, I wrote a little inscription on the inside cover. I will forever think that is the sweetest part of gifting a book.

I went back and printed a photo from each of his ski trips over the years. If the destination was featured in the book, I taped the photo right onto that page and noted the year he went. If it was not included, I tucked the photo into the closest location I could find and still dated it. It turned the book from something beautiful into something I hope he will treasure and add to for many years to come.

The gift was a big hit. Both Honey and Whit have picked it up numerous times to flip through and reminisce.

It is currently living on the kitchen island as they plot ski trip 2027, which will be our last one before the empty nest. Which, if you ask me, means the “Read” gift did exactly what it was supposed to do. :-)
