Culloden Battlefield Site

After breakfast at the hotel, an absolutely captivating local Highlander and historian led us to the site of one of the most harrowing battles in British history – the 1745 Jacobite Rising. Here, we stood on the windswept moor where the Jacobites made their final stand, admired artifacts from the battle and experienced the Battle of Culloden in the visitor center’s interactive display. Our guide painted a picture of the battle, passionately explaining the battles and days leading up to Culloden and even showing us the very soil in which the two armies lined up to battle. We learned about the realities of Culloden, versus the romanticized version portrayed in popular books and shows. One thing that I didn’t fully understand based on my limited knowledge (garnered from Outlander, lol) is that the Jacobites were not fighting for Scotland, but rather to restore the Stewart monarchy to the British throne. It was a memorable experience.

Lunch at Mustard Seed Restaurant

Lunch was held at Mustard Seed Restaurant, a well-known spot that is a favorite amongst the locals. The simple cooking and warm, friendly atmosphere was perfect. Located on the banks of River Ness in a converted church, the restaurant itself was stunning with wonderful ambiance. It was a marvelous choice and I am so glad we got to eat here!

Afternoon in Inverness

We had the entire afternoon free to explore, shop, or do as we please. We explored the town and all of its charming shops.

Dinner and Scottish Entertainment at Bogbain Farm

Bobgain is an 18th century farm that overlooks Inverness. Dating back to 1591 when the site was a stop for traders heading to the market in Inverness, Bogbain has hosted many happy revelers, and helped create lifelong memories. We celebrated our journey in the Highlands at in this very barn with a delightful evening filled with Ceilidh dancing, traditional Scottish music, delicious Scottish barbecue and storytelling.

Inside, we learned the stories behind Gaelic music and then were dazzled by these incredible musicians and Scots.

We moved into the dining room for the BBQ dinner and were entertained by more live music. After dinner, we were treated to a performance by a Gaelic dancer and were given a little lesson. SO much fun!

For our final event we retreated to the 16th century barn. Here, the musicians took the stage and we were taught – and danced – the celidh. It was absolute perfection and just a perfect example of why I keep coming back to Adventures by Disney. I could never create this night on my own and it is a night I will never forget.
