Election Night Dinner {The Plan}

UPDATE:  Read about our dinner celebration HERE

With just three days till E-Day, I cannot wait to let the littles stay up late and watch the votes roll in on November 6!! I’m planning an easy peasy themed supper for the night’s events and wanted to go on and share all the planning details in case y’all would like to join in on the merriment!

Decor – I’m going to pull out left over Independence Day flags, plates, napkins and such to set a festive table.

Eats – We’ll be dining on “bipartisan” pizza – half veggie and half meat. Dessert will likely be Donkey Tails and Elephant Ears made from our favorite Cinco de Mayo churros recipe. (I’ll twist the Donkey Tails and roll up the Elephant Ears.)

Drinks – I think we’ll whip up a Star Spangled Sipper, something like this. (Read the instructions because it’s somewhat of a science experiment to boot!)

Activity – I’m going to print or draw out a large blank map of the USA and have the littles color in the states with red or blue as the polls close. Since the PCP loves math so much, I think we’ll also keep some sort of tally of each state’s electoral votes and how many each candidate needs to get to the coveted 270. This site has a great explanation for kids.

I put together a little menu and table cards for our affair and they are available for free download through the link below. As always, if you have trouble just let me know!

And, in the spirit of election night, I’ll leave you with a little conversation overheard the other day (I am in no way trying to incite a political debate. Rather, this was just SO representative of their personalities I couldn’t not share) …

John: I’m cheering for Mitt Romney.

Whit: Why? I’m cheering for the Falcons.

*rolls on floor laughing*

xoxo

  1. You are too cute! We will be eating on the go (dance observation day) but we can try the desserts! My girls are teenagers…but loved the mummy hot dogs the other night! As always, thanks for sharing!

  2. What a great idea! l'll bet your kids remember this a long time. My kids are 22 and 24 and the other day my daughter asked me if I remembered that we got the map and colored the states red and blue and counted electoral votes when we were homeschooling.

  3. What a great idea for a party! I would love to have you come share some of your great ideas at the link party on ‘Or so she says…' There’s one going on right now (and every Saturday – Tuesday). We’ve also got a fun “Favorite Things” giveaway going on right now. Hope to see you there! http://www.oneshetwoshe.com

  4. You come up with the neatest ideas to celebrate all kinds of occassions! I like to do the same, but I'm not nearly as creative as you.

I've been following your blog for some time now and really love it….I'm also a Georgia girl :)

I wish so much that blogging had existed when my only son was born. I can see me doing alot of the same things you do for your boys. Dillan is 18 now and at Georgia State University. But I still try to make events special for him. There's just something about those boys….they steal their mothers' hearts :)

I'll be having my own little "Political Party" tomorrow night. With Dillan away at college and my husband traveling, it will be just me and Lucy (my furry four-legged daughter), but nevertheless, I will be enjoying election night and all the drama that goes with it :)

My son is 18 now and in his first year of college at Georgia State. But I still try to be creative and do special things for him :)

With Dil away at college and my husband traveling, I will be having my own little "Political Party" tomorrow night…well, my furry, four legged daughter will be there too :) But nevertheless, I will still be celebrating all the drama of election night and watching the results come in!

  6. What a great idea! My littles are still a bit young to appreciate election night (2 and a half, and 4 months, ha!). But, I love that you are able to do something like this that is educational and fun and also respectful to both parties! I've noticed a disturbing trend lately of children repeating what they hear from their parents and saying some downright disrespectful things.

  7. Cute ideas! I was at a store in Dallas last month. They were selling Republican Pasta ( No taxes were added in the making of this pasta!) and Democratic Pasta ( No liberties were taken in the making of this pasta!) They also had Apple Pie cookies, GOP Cookies, and Democratic Snacks. The cutest tins for each. ;-)

  8. So cute!! Thanks for the printables! Our family will be having a little party tonight thanks to this post. What a great idea!!
    Happy election day!!

  9. Your kids will always remember these things…my freshman in high school asked yesterday if we were still going to color the map like we have in the past! I love that they still don't feel to old (ages 14, 12 and 10) for these great family moments. Going to use the Star Spangled Sipper idea! Thank you! Enjoy your dinner tonight!

  10. I just started following your blog about a month & a half ago (I only follow about 4 blogs) & found you in the funniest way – a pin from pinterest with the Disney Fun facts that I put in the kids lunch boxes.

I haven't commented before but had to comment on this post – I just LOVED it!!! My kids thought the drinks were just awesome & we practiced a couple of times before tonight to get it just right. The whole dinner was a success & my hubs is IN LOVE with the churros & my 4 year old said "Mommy, these Donkey Legs are DELISHHHHHOUS". She doesn't quite understand it all yet but my 6 & 8 year olds do.

Thanks for all of your great ideas!
    Hope – Memphis, Tennessee
