Musings

It’s been quite some time since I did one of these. Lots of random thoughts have been stored up for this…I’ve been churning out all sorts of lovely mouse pads. These are two of my faves… You can find them in my etsy store!! While I’m at it, I adore my white wireless mouse. I’ve had it for a few months now and LOVE not having a tangled cord in the way at all times. Besides, it looks much sweeter in my office.

Did y’all see the PRECIOUS outfit we gave CeeCee for her birthday???? Sister tried it on her for us and it was ahhhh-dorable. The set is from Beaufort Bonnet Company. I die at how they monogram everything with the signature little bow at the bottom. Their spring line is too precious for words…

The baby counted out 100 pennies for the 100th day of school and got a Sacagawea dollar in exchange!!! He promptly scurried that off to where he keeps his treasures in his room.

I fell hard for this tombstone door on Instagram. I think it would make a lovely pocket door for our one-day-far-far-from-today master bathroom renovation.

Mother scored me this Lilly tray at Homegoods for $12. TWELVE DOLLARS, y’all!!! Squeal‘

Have y’all played KenKen yet? It’s kinda like sudoku but with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Honey and I may or may not have spent our evening sitting side by side in bed playing this on our phones. What we’ve got is real.

Mother and I made my tutu’s for the Disney Princess race weekend later this month. Any guesses who I’m dressing up as???

I volunteered to make giant cookies in the shape of the state of GA for John’s class. They decorated them to represent the regions of the state in what was a fun and clever activity!! I DO adore his new teacher :-)

Speaking of the PCP, he placed top 3 in every chess tournament for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders in the first semester!! Honey and I are crazy proud of him and have been encouraging him (on the verge of bribing) to keep playing. One by one, his little friends have dropped out and he says he just doesn’t have fun with it any more. It’s SO hard to just say “fine then give it up” when he shows so much promise and clearly learns so much from it (problem solving, strategic thinking, math, patience, sportsmanship). Any words of advise here?

I volunteered for science lab earlier in the week and grabbed this photo…his table won a contest the week before and got to feed the pet – an african spurred tortoise.

The chandelier shades have been relocated to the foyer, at least for the time being. I’m SO happy with this same-old-same-old view.

I make A LOT of chili in the winter. These are three of my favorites, and then I introduced a fourth to the rotation last month.

I feel like we had a real adjustment period with bed times, homework and reading after the holidays. This weekend felt like normal again – a lot of relaxing, cooking and board games. It had been too long since we played Ticket to Ride. In the past, we had let Whit be on a team with one of us since he is a tish young for the game. Friday night we let him play but without route cards. If you know this game, you can appreciate the randomness this added. It was a fun way to get him involved, and made it pretty interesting for the rest of us!

Is it just me, or is the Liturgy of the Eucharist one of the most beautiful parts of mass?!

I am SO happy my shows are starting to come back on!!! I’m all caught up on Revenge and have a few episodes of Reign, Vampire Diaries and How to Get Away with Murder on Hulu!!!

Last but not least, I just wanted to say that two of my etsy customer made my day yesterday. I flip flopped the labels on their packages and both were SO kind and understanding AND volunteered to forward the packages on to the correct recipients. It truly made my day. I have no idea if they are blog readers, but if they are, THANK YOU!!! I’ll pay it forward today!

TGIF, y’all!
xoxo

  1. Musings posts are my very favorite!

The outfit from BBC is absolutely precious – I just know CeeCee will be adorable in it this Spring/Summer! I had to laugh at Whit scurrying away to hide his treasure. Our boys both have a few Sacagawea dollars and really thing they have something special! Princess prediction : Pocohontas? Admittedly, I know nothing about Disney princesses! Those Georgia cookies – what a smart & fun idea! – so happy for y'all that the situation was resolved for the better!

And congratulations to John on his chess prowess! This will sound incredibly off the wall, but here goes. When we've run up against a situation like this with our oldest (generally successful, hardworking, loves learning) – we've reminded him that (fill in the blank) will be a great part of his being The Most Interesting Man in the World. Y'all, he really wants this title! Boys.

    Happy, happy (warm!) weekend! xoxo

  2. Amanda, it's great to get caught up on everything going on with you. I love musings! Not that it will work with your little one, but when mine wanted to give up band we talked to him about how talented he was in it. We also expressed to him that God had given him a gift in this area and perhaps God had a plan for that. We made him make a list of the pros and cons of band and we required him to come up with a "replacement" activity that was worthy. Quitting something to do "nothing" isn't an option. He stayed in band. Now he loves it and met his best friend in band. :-)

  3. Hi, Amanda! This is a bit disjointed comment, but, I love the mouse pads, so very cute. I had to laugh about how Whit "scurries off" to his room with his money. My son does the exact same thing. I've never played KenKen, but love Sudoku, so I'll have to try it. Are you going to be Elsa for the Princess run? The fringe is throwing me (looks like Pocahontas fringe). Love the Georgia cookies-I guess I am living in the 'pretzel zone.' Did you know Ticket to Ride has a card game & several expansion packs? Congratulations to John for doing so well in chess! PLEASE don't let him stop! Whenever we wanted to stop an activity, we had to do something else. I know there is a fine line with not wanting to turn him off to chess. I think we all know someone that gave up on an activity, and later in life wished they had stuck with it. Tell him all of your blog followers are VERY wise and we collectively think he should continue playing chess! I was just thinking about Lent fast approaching and loved, and still love, the Stations of the Cross. Have a great weekend!

    1. Hi Teresa :-) Yes, Poco for the 5K. I should have specified there are 2 different costumes. The other is for the 10k. What was I thinking????!!!!! Going to have to check out the TTR card game. And yes, you blog readers are very wise and have given me sound advise time and again. I need to give stations of a cross a new try… I found it dreadful as a child (being honest here). xoxo

  4. Listen to this coincidence…just last night my son was on my computer and says to me, "Mom, you really need a new mousepad!" (Mine is just a plain blue one that has seen better days). Anyway, as I looked at it I thought, "Yeah, I should get one of those cute monogrammed ones!" Seriously!!! I am heading over to your etsy store to check yours out.
As for the chess quitting dilemma…I wish I had some good advice for you. (I love the advice in the comments above!) We go through that type of thing with piano every now and then with both of my boys. It's such a huge commitment to practice all the time and they get bored and frustrated sometimes. Like chess, I think piano gives them confidence, patience, discipline…all those things we are trying to instill. We always tell them that every adult who has ever played and quit always says they wish they had stuck with it! – which is so true!
I could use a good chili recipe these days…it's been freezing cold here and we are expecting more snow on Sunday! Enjoy your weekend!

  5. Love your musings post. The mouse pads are adorable. And, I love that darling outfit you got for CeeCee. She is going to be the cutest girl on the block come springtime.
As for John wanting to quit chess…I can relate, after 6+ years of our oldest figure skating (4+ for her sister) and winning many competitions regionally/nationally, she came to us and said she was done. While we never had high hopes either would become an olympian, it had become a way of life for all of us. However, we had always told the girls that when something they were once passionate about becomes a chore and is no longer fun than maybe it is time to move on to another new endeavor. You can always come back to it if you miss it!! Elie took up gymnastics and became a competitive cheerleader (she has now coached little ones for a couple years and is very passionate about it) and Katie took up volleyball, played varsity and club ball, and coached little ones as well. I will agree however, doing nothing was NOT an option. Each took a few months to try different things (piano, art, gymnastics, golf, tennis, volleyball) before settling on the two I mentioned.
I can also say without a doubt that certain things kids decide to take on as their passion are sometimes thought of as uncool. Ludicrous I know, but nowadays that is just the facts. Maybe he is feeling that type of pressure from his friends that have no longer decided to play/compete. This is the harder talk to have with him. But, there are many examples of people who stuck with those kinds of things and have made a huge impact later on in giving those talents back to others (musicians come to mind).

  6. Our boy just counted 100 pennies for school on Thursday! It was simple and quick and as creative as I could be. I'm guessing Cinderella for your run! We loooooove chili around here – maybe that will be on my menu next week! We also LOOOOOVE Ticket to Ride. We play several times a week after our littles are in bed!

  7. P.S. Don't you LOVE "Fixer Upper" ? They are not far from me…a couple of hours. I heard that they are going to be doing some renos in this area. Would so love to meet them!

    xo

  8. Love your musings, Amanda! That outfit for CeeCee is adorable–makes me miss having my baby girl. I always dressed her to the "nines"–She is 26 now, so I don't think she'd go for monograms and smocked clothes anymore! ;) I feel your dilemma with wanting to quit chess. My daughter quit piano lessons in the 8th grade, and it just broke my heart because she had the natural talent. I agree with some of the other some of the others who commented on this–quitting and doing nothing is not an option. If John really doesn't want to play anymore, then let him come up with other options that he may have a passion for. Good luck!
