Sunday Supper {Mummy Stromboli}

Happy Sunday! This week I have a REALLY easy and fun dinner for Halloween – Mummy Stromboli. I thought it up when Mother was telling me about a recipe she was making with asparagus, and immediately added it to our menu.

Mummy Stromboli

Ingredients (For 2 Large Mummies)

  • Pizza dough – I prefer to work with 2 packs of fresh pizza dough, already rolled out flat from the grocery store bakery; You can also use their balls of dough but they require more work.
  • Pack of large deli pepperoni slices – I use either the pre-packaged Boar’s Head or Publix brand in the deli; Keep one slice of pepperoni aside when filling the stromboli
  • 2 packages provolone cheese, sliced
  • Pizza sauce for dipping – We love Mid’s

Instructions

  • Pre heat the oven to 350.
  • Line two large sheet pans with parchment paper.
  • If you bought the already rolled dough, just unfold it and stretch it out just slightly to make a rectangle on the parchment.   If you bought the bag of dough in a ball, roll it out as best you can.  I make sure that the long side is about the length of my jelly roll pan.
  • In the middle of your long side, layer 1/4 of your pepperoni and 1/2 of one package of cheese.  Then add another layer of the next 1/4 of pepperoni and rest of the cheese package.
  • Using a pizza cutter (or knife, but I find a pizza cutter is great for dough), cut slits along both sides of the dough. They can be varying in width and far from perfectly straight.
  • Pull the strips up and over the filling to make a mummy! Get creative and have fun here. You don’t want it to be methodical like a braid. Mummies are messy. (right?) I had Whit do ours.
  • Repeat with your second pack of dough and cheese and the remaining pepperoni.
  • Using scissors, cut 4 eyes from the slice of pepperoni you set aside. Whit also added a mouth for our mummy.
  • Bake at 350 for 25 – 30 minutes until puffed and nicely browned on top.
  • Cut into slices and serve with warm pizza sauce, if desired.

  1. We love Stromboli – it’s never occurred to me to shape it into a mummy! Thanks for sharing! xo

  2. I make something similar with puff pastry at Christmas time, shaped like a tree using olives as ornaments, sprinkle with oregano and parmesan cheese. It’s a fun treat for kids and adults.
