What Time Is It? Show Time {Hamilton Dinner, Movie & Printables}

I don’t know about y’all, but Hamilton on Disney + has been a highlight of our month. Honey rigged up a “screen on the green” and we invited our next door neighbors over for an alfresco dinner and movie in the driveway.

Honey was in charge of drinks and had a lot of fun finding The Federalist red, Magistrate white and Sam Adams beers.

I put all of this together in an afternoon and stuck with things I had in gold and black for decor. This was the easiest centerpiece – a book from my shelf and flowers from my yard. Song lyrics go a long way in any Hamilton celebration.

We set everything up on the porch in the fresh air and created an easy themed menu from songs in the show.

  • A. Ham Sandwiches (ham and cheese sandwiches)
  • A. Burr-gers (sliders and toppings)
  • Fries on Your Side (french fries from air fryer)
  • (Can’t) Say No To This (banana pudding for dessert!)

You can find the free printable food tags for this menu here:

A. Ham Sandwiches {Make Ahead Ham and Swiss Sandwiches}

Two packages Hawaiian Rolls (12 count each), sliced
1 lb. honey ham, coarsely chopped
8 oz. swiss cheese, shredded
1 small onion, very finely chopped
1 T. worchestershire sauce
1 cup butter, softened
2 T.  poppy seeds
4 T. prepared mustard

– On bottom halves of rolls, evenly top with ham and cheese.
– Soften butter and mix well with onion, worchestershire sauce, poppy seeds and mustard.  Spread mixture on top halves of split rolls.
– Place sandwiches on baking pan and cover tightly with foil.  Refrigerate. These are great to make a day in advance!
– Before serving, preheat oven to 250.  Bake sandwiches until heated through – you have a lot of liberty here – I allow at least 30 minutes but have left them in the oven for an hour before a party!

Note: I sometimes stretch the recipe to go on 3 dozen Hawaiian rolls and it is fine, depending on how many people you need to feed.

A. Burr-gers {Sliders and Fixings}

This is my FAVORITE way to make burgers and exactly the way Daddy-O has done them since the beginning of time!

  • 2 lbs lean ground beef
  • 1 packet Lipton onion soup mix (blue box)
  • 1/2 cup water

Mix everything well in a large bowl. Honey made slider sized patties and we used regular Hawaiian rolls (butter, not sweet) for the buns. Grill on the Big Green Egg!

Fries on Your Side {French Fries}

No recipe here…. I bought a bag of fries and cooked in the air fryer. :-)

(Can’t) Say No To This {Banana Pudding}

This is the BEST banana pudding. It is a semi-homemade version of the one at Back in the Day Bakery in Savannah. Layers include vanilla pudding, sliced bananas (you’ll need 8), fresh whipped cream and shortbread cookie bars.

Vanilla Pudding

You can certainly make homemade pudding but I put this whole thing together in an afternoon! I used two boxes of instant vanilla pudding with skim milk because that is what I had. It was still delicious and saved a lot of time!

Shortbread Cookies

This is my favorite recipe and I use it on its own, not just in banana pudding.

1 lb. unsalted butter at room temp
1.5 cups sugar
1 tsp salt
4 tsp vanilla extract
4 cups flour

Position a rack in the lower 1/3 of oven and preheat to 350. Line a large cookie sheet with parchment.

Cream the butter, sugar, salt and vanilla together until light and fluffy, 2-3 minutes on medium speed.

Scrape down the sides of the bowl. On low, add the flour in thirds, beating until incorporated for 1-2 minutes. Be sure that all bits of flour and butter are mixed in.

Press the dough evenly into a cookie sheet using your fingers. Bake for 25 – 30 minutes, rotating pan half way through, until golden. Remove from oven and cool completely. Cut into bars.

Fresh Whipped Cream

Beat 2 cups heavy cream in a stand mixer until it starts to thicken. Add 1/4 cup confectioners sugar and beat until cream holds soft peaks.

Assembling the Layers

Spoon 1/3 of the pudding into a large serving bowl. Top with 1/3 of shortbread cookies, 1/3 sliced bananas and 1/3 whipped cream. Repeat.

Show Time

The neighbors brought their own chairs and just as the sun was finally setting we retreated to the driveway for the main event! It felt SO good to entertain again – for the first time in months. It was different, but still great.

We have watched 2 – 3 movies a week outside in the past month and will get Honey to share the details on what system he uses and how he sets it up. (He also still owes us a screen porch tutorial.)

We’ve watched the show on Disney + a few times and marveled at the details we caught versus seeing it live. Most notable were the king’s saliva and Eliza’s final gasp. (A few details were also lost, in our opinion.) I can’t wait to see live shows again.
