Reimagining the Living Room {The Toddler Portraits}

In sharing photos of our refreshed dining room here and over on Instagram, I’ve had so many questions over the last eighteen months about where the boys’ portraits went! Rest assured – they are among my most prized possessions, and they didn’t go far at all.

When we updated the dining room, I knew I didn’t want to cover too much of the beautiful new wallpaper, so I moved the boys’ portraits just next door to the living room. I actually love them here. The wall is a bit more shaded, which helps protect them from the sun, and I get to enjoy them all over again in a new spot.

When I relocated them, I decided to simplify the frames too. Over time, my taste has shifted in little ways, and the large, fancy frames didn’t speak to me like they once did. I love how the simpler frames let the portraits themselves shine. The four oyster paintings have always hung here. Now the boys keep them company on either side, and it feels just right.

These formal portraits were taken when each boy was three years old… a lifetime ago and just yesterday, all at once. I went back and read what I wrote about them in 2012, and I could still hear Whit’s matter-of-fact voice insisting he wasn’t an octopus. Moments like that remind me why I keep this blog going. There have been times I’ve thought about stepping away, but having this little corner of the internet to revisit sweet, ordinary days makes every bit of time and effort worth it. In many ways, it’s my diary of life as a mother. Ordinary, precious, fleeting.

If you’d like a little trip down memory lane with me, you can peek back at my original formal portraits post and see the day I dolled up the baby for his portrait session. Both portraits were taken at the very same age, in front of the very same fence, in nearly identical outfits (I wanted each boy to have his own to pass down), just three short – but somehow so long – years apart.

I feel the same way about them now as I did thirteen years ago… I will treasure these forever. Always.
