One Room Challenge: Powder Room {Week 1}

I’ve got a bee in my bonnet and its got everything to do with making over my powder room.   This is how it looked on move-in day…

… and then I updated it to the current look …

It’s not awful by any means.  But it’s also not what I ever wanted it to look like.  You see, when we frantically updated our house before moving in six years ago we did pretty good.  I had a three month old, a three year old, was just back to work after maternity leave, had shockingly sold our house in a week, and was living with friends.  We were on a race against the clock to get the place updated before we wore out our welcome.  Everything turned out just as planned EXCEPT the powder room.  I loved the toile wallpaper, ordered it and had it sent straight to the house.   Our contractor got it up lickety split.  So fast, in fact, that the first time I laid eyes on the paper in real life it was already hanging on my walls.  The scale was ALL WRONG.  It was like a miniature toile.  I had the matching fabric that was completely lovely (and in different scale) so I never thought the paper would be different.  So, I’ve disliked it from the get-go.

I’ve got this crazy insane idea to join in on the One Room Challenge.  It’s essentially a personal challenge to update one room over the course of six weeks.  If I can actually pull this off, it will be a miracle.  Not that I have that much to do on this particular project, rather that I have so many other things on my plate.  At the same time, it’s that 6 week deadline that has me jumping in.  If I had a dollar for every time I’ve thought about redoing this room…. well, I could have paid for the update.

I put this together a vision board MONTHS ago and got so far as to order the towels.  Yeaaaaah.  It’s a tiny room, so that’s a bonus.

Powder Room

Here is my to-do list:

  • order wallpaper
  • have wallpaper hung
  • paint ceiling
  • rug
  • mirror
  • soap dispenser
  • paint cabinet (can you believe I, Amanda of Dixie Delights, am going to paint wood? )
  • cabinet pulls – paint or get new?
  • towels
  • monogram towels
  • art
  • figure out frame for art
  • shelves – purchase or DIY???
  • towel bars & tp roller – paint or get new????
  • decorate shelves
  • have light box moved to ceiling
  • chandelier

It took every ounce of energy I had today just to write this post.  Here’s to hoping motivation sets in this weekend.  Er… make that next week.  I’m headed home for the weekend!!!!!!!!!!

xoxo

  1. Well, you have to start somewhere. With the towels you have officially started. I can’t wait to see the final result.

  2. Love, love the vision- especially the wallpaper! Can’t wait to see how it all turns out!

  3. Yay! I’m so happy you are doing it! I’m in for my master bath. I’ll say a little prayer for you if you say one for me. I love, love, love your vision board. I know you’ll do an awesome job just like you always do!

    1. Girl, I’d need a 6 month challenge to get my master done. But I envy you that yours will be done in 6 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!! Can’t wait to see it all unfold :-)

  4. GIRL I just hung that same wallpaper in pink myself. I love it so much. I hung it b/c if you read my blog….my half bath was quoted at $$$$$ to have wallpaper hung. It’s a closet. So I decided to wallpaper my laundry room instead and do myself. If I could do it then I can do my powder room. Which I will be doing. I I am not waiting for cabinets. If you have seen a to die for utility sink please share!

    1. Yes I love the pink too!!!! To die for utility sink??? That’s an oxymoron if I’ve ever heard one :-) I don’t know…. I went very basic with mine because it always has unsavory things in it like dirty baseball pants and sheets Elsa threw up on while I was sleeping. Yeeeeaaaaahhhhh.

      1. But, I’m thinking of having a garbage disposal attached too. EEEEEEKKKKKKSSSS LOL When did life become dreams of a laundry room. What happened to my dreams of a huge closet? :)

    1. Progress, Jenny. Progress. I have two cute towels. Too bad I didn’t realize I actually needed three when they were on sale. HAHA.

  5. I’ve always liked the toile wallpaper but I think it clashes with the countertop. Have you thought about that with the new wallpaper? I like the new wallpaper as well. Can’t wait to see!

      1. Hey, so we were in Bald Head and the kitchen had originally nasty counters. The decorator was on a budget so she used contact paper in a marble. Put that over it. Then did a shellac. I was obsessed. It held it and was amazing. I almost want to install ugly counters just to do this DIY project. I thought it was genius.

  6. The pattern on that wallpaper looks exactly like the paper in my powder room…is that a Thibaut paper? Mine is their Marco Polo in the pink colorway. I’ve never seen it in a solid colorway like that though but I love it! Can you share the source? BTW – I’ve had it in my powder room for years and it probably the one thing people always compliment my house on the most…so rest assured you are making a solid choice:)

  7. Love your inspiration board … and let’s face it when we leave the little, final details to last they get lost in the shuffle so you are waaaaay ahead of the curve by having monogrammed towels all set!! Can’t wait to see that paper up!! I’m doing a bathroom as well.

  8. Love the new powder room inspiration board. It will be stunning. Amanda I love your blog. I’ve used your suggestion and recommendations during my trips to Savannah recently. Have you tried The Funky Brunch Cafe? You make your own PANCAKES at your table. The littles will love it and you can cross make pancakes off of your bucket list! It is a little pricey for breakfast but really fun. I suggest getting there early because the only have a limited number of griddle tables.

  9. Oh, I adore your inspiration board. I can not wait for this to all come together. We are ORC’ing our master bath and I’m already itching for it to be put back together. Oh, my. Best of luck!
