Sun Valley Idaho {Arrival, Village Tree Lighting & Roundhouse Dinner}

Christmas vacation has commenced! We were out of the house before 5:30 AM from ATL > SLC > SUV. Watching the scenery change below us was magic.

Sun Valley Lodge

We arrived at the Sun Valley Lodge, America’s first destination ski resort, in time for lunch. It was just as charming as I had hoped. Snow covered mountains, tree lined drives, ice and snow sculptures and even a little pond with ducks and swans.

We settled into our suite, unpacked, and then hit the outdoor heated pool and poolside cafe for lunch!

Sun Valley Village Tree Lighting

We walked over to the Village for the annual tree lighting ceremony. I’ve truly never felt more like I was inside a Hallmark movie! There were carolers, hot cocoa and cookie stands (free), Santa, a community gingerbread competition (we voted!), and of course the magical main event.

On the walk back to the lodge, I was in awe of the charm and beauty. I didn’t think we’d be able to top Deer Valley from last year, but Sun Valley is magic.

The Roundhouse

Honey and I got the boys settled back in the room and headed out for date night! We know how taxing a travel day and time change are and decided to plan for it this year – they ate in the room and were in bed watching Netflix early. It was wonderful – not fighting to get them dressed and out the door – and everyone was happy.

Our transportation to dinner… we were given blankets to snuggle up in for the ride up. It was beautiful and eerie just how quiet and still the mountain was at night and from this vantage point.

Perched atop the Roundhouse Express gondola at 7,700 feet of elevation on Bald Mountain, The Roundhouse has been serving up memorable meals, soul-warming drinks, and stunning views since 1939. The Roundhouse is America’s original on-mountain dining experience and offers the authentic charm and unmatched elegance for which Sun Valley is known. Reservations are quite difficult to come by and I am SO glad I had the forethought to call far in advance.

We dined in front of a roaring fire in what was an intimate and memorable evening.

The prix fixe menu consists of four courses.
First: Smorgasbord
Second: We both chose the Root Vegetable Bisque
Main: We both chose Beef Tenderloin.
Dessert: Sweet Charcuterie

Everything was divine and we both said many times how much we enjoyed our evening! We bundled up in warm blankets for the gondola ride back down mountain.

Our first day in Sun Valley in one word: magic.
