Backyard Huddle Kickoff

There is just a small group of kids that move from our elementary school to our middle school. That alone was a hard adjustment for John entering 6th grade. With Whit starting middle school virtually, I dreamed for weeks about a way to help the small group of kids that were in his shoes find a way to be together socially, grow in faith, have some fun and know that they aren’t in this alone. I approached a dear friend and girl mom (key to anything at this age) and we came up with the “Backyard Huddle”. We enlisted the help of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to kick it off and, when they told us they had been praying for something like this for months, we both knew this was going to be amazing.

Our first monthly meet up took place before the virtual school started last Thursday in my co-host’s back yard. We asked the kids to be dropped off in the driveway, bring their own chairs and to feel comfortable wearing masks. Our speaker from the FCA started our morning with a prayer, words of encouragement and ice breaker, taking up the first 30 minutes. We spoke to how many heroes we’ve all seen over the last six months and how THEY are young heroes too, starting a new, uncertain school year with kindness, grace, patience and hard work.

The kids were free to socialize and grab a breakfast bag for the remaining 30 minutes. We had them wear school colors this month, and plan to continue with a new theme each month going forward. (Again, I have so many dreams for this group!)

From a mom’s perspective, I can tell you that hearing the chatter and laughter of children brought tears to my eyes. Every single one left with a huge smile, standing a bit taller, and with a little pep in their step. We received great feedback from the other parents and look forward to bringing this group together for friendship, fellowship and fun for the rest of their middle school careers.

I Wish My Teacher Knew

I’m sure I’ve shared this previously, but Mother was a lifelong educator. She taught elementary school when we were little and then attended night school for three more degrees before eventually retiring as deputy superintendent of the public school system. I grew up spending dinners listening to debriefs on her days at school, afternoons waiting… Read More
