Shelburne Museum Experience

We loaded up on our coach and headed out for the day. I always share this when I write about our adventures, but it’s worth saying it again. Every moment is intentional and every detail is handled. Whenever you’re on a luxury coach, you have candies, cold waters, chargers and either the Adventure guides or step-on guides telling you things about where you’re headed.

Our morning was spent at the Shelburne Museum. This is a fascinating and unique way to explore American history, art and design. It is American history preserved in Vermont culture, and it is full of wonder and discovery.

There are thirty-nine structures on forty-five acres. Our group had access to the museum before it opened to the public! We started with a hands-on printing experience with a 19th-century printing press. Our hand made postcards are such a fun souvenir.

Afterwards we had a docent led tour of the train complex.

Our activities with the group wrapped up with a VIP ride on the 1920 carousel.

The rest of our morning was free to explore! The museum is designed to allow visitors the pleasure of discovery – and did we ever! From the jail cell to the stone cottage to the general store to the covered bridge to the round barn to the horseshoe barn, decoy collection (Strangely, something Honey has always loved!!)

Clemmons Family Farm

Our afternoon was spent at the Clemmons Family Farm. This 148-acre farm has been owned by the Clemmons family since 1962, and is one of only a few African American owned farms in Vermont.

Lunch in the most picturesque vista behind the old barn was prepared by a culinary artist from Ethiopia. We tucked into yedoro alicha, gomen, yemesser wet and atakilt wat. We learned about the ingredients, how they are prepared and the customs and traditions of family dining in Ethiopia. It took a little getting used to, but we ate with our hands using the delicious injera bread as an edible utensil.

After lunch, we joined the celebration of African American heritage and multiculturalism through activities and exhibits that revolve around arts, culture and science. We learned the bongos and a traditional dance from an artist from Ghana. It was so much fun and the boys completely let go and joined in.

Our time wrapped up on the hillside overlooking the Adirondacks for a painting session with a Vermont visual artist. It was just spectacular and we each have another very special keepsake of our time todoay.

Hen of the Wood Dinner

We had free time for our last night in Burlington. Honey and snuck away for a date at Hen of the Wood. We had read so many wonderful things and all were spot on.

Our evening ended with a short walk for Maple Creemees and one last Lake Champlain sunset.
