Breakfast at the Lodge

For our final morning at the Lodge, we enjoyed another delicious Vermont country breakfast, with eggs from farm, real Vermont maple syrup and all the trimmings. The boys love this breakfast so much, they beat us downstairs at 7AM.

After breakfast, our guides said they had a special treat in store. At the Welcome Dinner on day 1, they asked every guest what they were most looking forward to. I only half jokingly said “singing the Sound of Music while twirling in the hills at the Trapp Lodge.”. Well, the guides went out to WalMart in Burlington and bought some curtains on clearance. Then, they hand sewed a dirndl for my big moment. It was absolutely awesome, totally embarrassing for my boys, and is something I’ll never forget. This is one glimpse into how special the Disney guides are and the lengths they go to to help families make memories.

The hills are truly alive. (A lovely view of the furry cows!)

Trapp Sugarhouse

Before departing the Lodge, we took the hike to the Trapp Sugarhouse with one of two Trapp Lodge syrup makers, Chris Poach. This was an absolutely fascinating (and beautiful) jaunt through the sugarbush and then on to the sugarhouse. Here, the Trapp family continues the centuries-old tradition of making pure Vermont maple syrup. We got a little taste and it was amazing. They only place you can try it and buy it is at the Trapp Lodge and we are delighted to bring some home.

Cold Hollow Cider Mill

For breakfast number two today (recall we had ice cream yesterday), our guides arranged a visit to Cold Hollow Cider Mill. Oh, this was a delightful little stop!! We learned about the cider mill and all enjoyed a few cups of cold apple cider. Our guides treated us to their legendary apple cider donuts, which were in fact, wonderfully delicious!

Drive to Montpelier with Vermont State Capital & Ethan Allen Story

Next, we boarded the coach for a drive to Montpelier and the Vermont State Capitol Building — a Montpelier icon and the smallest state capitol in the country. The building, which dates back to 1859, is finely detailed and is set against a stunning backdrop. While at the Vermont State Capitol, we also heard the story of Vermont’s most famous Revolutionary hero, Ethan Allen.

Back on the bus, we enjoyed a picnic lunch and watched Pete’s Dragon (they took it to a vote!) We love that Disney does all of the driving (and thinking and planning). We can literally sit back, relax and enjoy a nap, the scenery, a snack or a movie.

White Mountains Hike

We bid adieu to Vermont and landed in New Hampshire by afternoon. We learned all about the Man in the Mountain as we arrived in the state.

Stopping at We spent about two hours on an absolutely breathtaking hike through the natural beauty of New Hampshire’s iconic White Mountains at Franconia State Park.

The Flume was spectacular – formed many millions of years ago in ancient geological time.

We enjoyed stopping off at all of the scenic overlooks, Bear Cave and Wolf’s Den. We marveled at how a round trip hike that started and ended at the same place could be uphill the entire way. :-)

Grand Summit Hotel at Attitash

We arrived at the Grand Summit Hotel at Attitash in the late afternoon and enjoyed a couple of free hours enjoying the resort amenities. The group came back together for a lovely dinner at The Tap Room, including hearty servings of good old fashioned comfort food. Everyone at the resort is just beyond nice and kind. What a wonderful New Hampshire welcome!
