Traveling to Maine

We woke up to a bountiful breakfast buffet at Grand Summit Hotel at Attitash before heading out. It was a rainy day, but that didn’t diminish the majestic New England landscapes on our way to Bar Harbor, Maine. We stopped at the Kennebec River Waterfront in Augusta, Maine for a couple of hours to break up the drive and enjoy lunch.

Back on the coach, our guides told us about local towns we drove through, we spotted a moose, we watched Pocohantas, and we played a variety of games to pass the time. They always do such thoughtful things – when we stopped for a bathroom break just inside the Maine state line, they treated everyone to donut holes because they were invented in Maine.

Bar Harbor Inn

Our ride concluded at the spectacular Bar Harbor Inn, a historic residence perched on the water’s edge of Bar Harbor, the gateway to Acadia National Park. This spectacular place will be our home for the rest of our adventure.

The itinerary normally includes a late-afternoon excursion aboard the Bailey Louise Todd, a 19th-century coasting schooner, but it was raining and foggy and all water excursions from the pier were cancelled. Instead, we enjoyed light dinner featuring iconic Maine dishes – savory lobster rolls and Whoopie Pies – at the hotel. Honey and I also popped in Oasis Lounge for a few blueberry libations and a bowl of lobster bisque.

We also had free time to explore Bar Harbor on our own. We wandered through the shops and this charming little town.

Bar Harbor Ghost Tour

Our guides were able to arrange a last minute ghost tour since our boat ride was cancelled and the weather cleared up. It was a fun way to see more of Bar Harbor and learn about its storied history and residents – both past and present.

The boys quite literally sniffed out this divine smelling pizza joint, so we headed back after the tour for dinner number two.
