Burlington & Lake Champlain Bike Ride

For an absolutely breathtaking start to the morning, we took a bike ride through some of the most stunning scenery in Vermont. The bike path, converted from the Central Vermont Railway, crosses through local beaches and parks and offers spectacular views of the city, Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains.

I did a 10 mile round trip ride, while the boys did an 18 mile trip to the gorgeous causeway and back! In my “free” time, I found a local chocolate shop and enjoyed an iced coffee and cookies.

Spirit of Ethan Allen Lake Champlain Cruise & Lunch

Next, we cruised across the blue waters of Lake Champlain, known as “The Sixth Great Lake,” surrounded with the beauty of the Champlain Valley and accompanied by lively narration. For lunch, we dined on a delicious meal prepared by the on-board kitchen staff and featuring locally sourced, fresh farm-to-table ingredients. It was a spectacular finale to our time in Burlington.

Trapp Family Lodge

I was beyond thrilled to arrive at the Trapp Family Lodge, our home for the next two nights. Here, guests experience European-style accommodations and cuisine along with spectacular mountain vistas and upscale amenities.

We started with a VIP tour, including a meet and greet with Sam von Trapp – grandson of Maria and the Baron! Along with his family, his sister’s family and his father (the youngest of Maria and Georg’s ten kids) still live and work here at the Lodge. We walked the gorgeous property, chosen by Maria herself because it reminded her of home in Austria, and I marveled at the beauty and the fact that they fled Austria to arrive in America with nine children and only $4. They literally sang for their lives. We met the absolutely darling small herd of (wild) Scottish Highland cattle. We later learned that one of them had a rare vet visit after our meet and greet. She was having trouble birthing her calf. :-( The baby did not make it, but mama did.

We also visited the private family cemetery where Maria, Georg and eight of their children rest in peace. Maria’s last home was the third floor of the lodge overlooking this site.

We have two rooms here at the lodge and they are lovely and comfortable. We have spectacular views of the mountains and slept with the windows open.

The Lounge and Trapp Family Lodge

Traveling with two teen boys means someone is always hungry. John and I spent our free time this afternoon enjoying pretzels and views, and talking about our trip and life in general. It was absolute perfection.

Adult Dinner at Trapp Family Lodge Bierhall

We ended today’s adventures over a lively dinner at the von Trapp Brewing Bierhall Restaurant. Here, we were treated to “a little Austria, a lot of Vermont” as we savored a freshly prepared Austrian meal — much of which is prepared on the wood-fired Parrilla grill – and beer made right there on site. It was absolutely delicious and such a fun night with our fellow adventurers.

These are the days!
