I thought I’d check in with my latest podcast obsessions. Per usual, the list is heavy on true crime.
Culpable
On February 26, 2014, Christian Andreacchio was found dead in the upstairs bathroom of his apartment from a single gunshot wound to the head. After a mere 45-minute investigation, local police ruled his death a suicide, despite substantial evidence that points to Christian’s death not only being a homicide, but premeditated murder. Host Dennis Cooper investigates and shares a compelling story about this suspicious death, the questions surrounding it, and a grieving family’s ongoing fight for justice.
I’m on episode 13 of Culpable and really don’t know what to think, other than it is such a sad story, Christian seemed to have so much going for him, and my heart goes out to his family.
Bear Brook
Two barrels. Four bodies. And the decades-long mystery that led to a serial killer. A podcast about a cold case that’s changing how murders will be investigated forever.
I binged Bear Brook and it was excellent. I particularly enjoyed the parts where they explained how at home DNA testing is changing investigative techniques. Have you done one of the at home tests? I still haven’t wrapped my brain around what I could possibly learn so I have not.
Family Secrets
If you’re not interested in true crime, Family Secrets may be for you! This fascinating podcast shares stories from guests who have discovered long-hidden secrets from their families’ past. These are not chronological so you can just put one on whenever you have time!
Catlick
Catlick is the lost story of how spies, villains, & midnight vigilantes nearly destroyed the South’s grandest city. Catlick is part true crime, part memoir, and part history-teacher-you-wish-you had. B.T. Harman weaves masterful storytelling into a riveting sonic experience that traces one of the most tragic series of events ever to befall a single American city.
I blew through the first four episodes of Catlick and can’t wait for more. It is set in Atlanta 1911-1915 and covers life, culture, race and crime in a compassionate, informative and compelling manner.
The Clearing
When April Balascio was 40 years old, something she’d feared for decades was finally proven true. Her father, Edward Wayne Edwards, really was a murderer. The Clearing is about what came after April called a detective in 2009 to tell him about her suspicions — a call that led to her father’s arrest and eventual conviction on multiple murders — and tracks the emotional journey as she and host Josh Dean dig back into her childhood, unravel the truth of her father’s life, and overturn a viral online narrative that had turned Edward Wayne Edwards into a kind of serial killer caricature.
Truth & Justice – Bill Little
The Truth & Justice Podcast is listener driven show, devoted to the pursuit of truth and justice. Host, Bob Ruff, investigates potential wrongful conviction and cold cases using a unique crowdsourcing approach. He is currently on the Bill Little case.
On Easter Sunday, 1991, 18-year-old gas station attendant William Little was shot and killed during an apparent armed robbery that yielded $60. 8 years later Jamie Snow was convicted despite contradictions in eye witness testimony and a lack of physical evidence. Bob digs into the events surrounding Bill’s murder and the subsequent investigation.
