Christmas Eve in Savannah was absolutely gorgeous this year. We woke up slow, with copious amounts of coffee sipped on the porch. At 70 degrees and sunny, it felt like the most magical Southern winter day. After a lazy start, we spent time walking through the historic district – side streets draped in garlands, live oaks full of moss and a kind of charm only Savannah can deliver.

Our big outing of the day was the Historic Savannah Theatre for the 23rd showing of their annual Christmas spectacular, A Christmas Tradition. It is every bit as festive and fun as the name promises. The whole theatre transforms into a glittering holiday picture with beloved Christmas classics, big musical numbers, a good dose of comedy, Santa and his dancing reindeer… truly the greatest event of the season. You just cannot help but leave smiling and humming a Christmas tune.

After the curtain closed, Mother and Daddy-O took all the grands back to the house. Honey and I detoured just long enough to pop into The Weyward Bar at the Perry Lane Hotel for their holiday pop-up. Perry Lane is my favorite luxury hotel in Savannah, and stepping inside – festive cocktails, twinkle lights, holiday music – felt extra special. The perfect little Christmas Eve treat.

Back home, we enjoyed snacking on all of the goodies that Marme had prepared and playing games late into the night. I think as a young mom you imagine Christmas is “peak” when everyone is little but honestly, Christmas with teens and young adults is pretty tops. The laughter is louder, the games are better, the jokes are funnier and I love watching them enjoy each other in a whole new way.

And then one of my favorite traditions of all… once the kids retreated to the bunk room, the adult wrapping party began. Nobody in this family wraps a single gift until Christmas Eve. Daddy-O opens the good bottle of scotch, Mother hauls out every ribbon, roll of paper, gift bag and tag under the sun and we wrap and snack and talk late into the night. We’ve done it this way ever since John was born, and I hope we continue forever.
Christmas Eve is always a little bit magical… but this one felt especially sweet.
