From all of us to all of you, Merry Christmas!
Christmas morning in Savannah started slow and sweet, just the way I love it. Marme and Daddy-O were up early, setting out breakfast, making coffee and getting a head start on our Christmas feast. As everyone woke, we sipped copious amounts of coffee out on the porch with no hurry for the opening to begin.
Gifts were opened one at a time – my very favorite way – and each one was savored. Afterward, the breakfast casserole was warmed for “round two,” and we all took our places back on the porch. Much of the day looked like that… napping, talking, playing games, fiddling with gifts. CeeCee and I especially had fun trying out her new beauty products and the curling iron we gave her for Christmas.
We sat down to our feast around 5pm and the menu was exactly what we always have and always love – Daddy-O’s blue cheese wedge and blackberry pork tenderloin, Mother’s twice baked potato casserole, yeast rolls, butter beans and carrots. And then the most beautiful and delicious bûche de Noël, lovingly provided by Sister’s family.
Once the food comas wore off, Daddy-O read ’Twas the Night Before Christmas, just as he has every single year since I was little. When Sister and I were young adults, Mother added a twist… everyone starts with a wrapped gift, and every time Daddy-O reads the word “and,” you pass your gift to the left. At the end of the story, whatever gift you’re holding is yours… and then the trades and barters begin. :-)
The night wrapped up with a late-night viewing of Die Hard (as one does) and then it was sweet dreams for all. From our home to yours, wishing you warmth, joy, peace and a heart full of gratitude this Christmas.
