Sunday Sweet {Old Fashioned Apple Crisp}

The highlight of this week’s Sunday Supper was absolutely dessert. We enjoyed a cozy classic – the Apple Crisp. I’ll be honest right out of the gate: like most apple desserts, this one is work. There’s peeling, coring, slicing… and then a little more slicing for good measure. But oh my goodness, it is so worth every minute.

There is simply nothing like a hot apple dessert straight out of the oven, bubbling around the edges, topped with a generous scoop of good vanilla ice cream. Ina’s version is exactly what you want an apple crisp to be. It’s warm and spiced, sweet but not cloying, with a buttery oat topping that crisps up beautifully in the oven. It’s the kind of dessert that makes a house smell like a home and brings the boys to the kitchen from the far reaches of the house asking “what are you making?” and “when is it ready?”.

This recipe does serve a crowd, and next time I’ll likely cut it in half for just our little family. We happily ate it for days… and days. No complaints here, but it’s definitely generous.

I usually think of apple desserts as a fall thing but I had a bee in my bonnet and the month on the calendar wasn’t going to deter me. I absolutely enjoyed this just as much in December as I likely would have in October.

If you’re craving something warm, comforting, and unapologetically classic, this one is a winner. Add the ice cream.
