Earlier this year I found the Litany of Humility on Whit’s desk. It came at a perfect time for our family and has led to many important and provoking conversations since.
Like the beatitude says, humility is “poverty of spirit.” It helps us acknowledge our own defects and have a “lowly” opinion of self, not to be confused with a low opinion of self. With this lowly disposition, we willingly submit ourselves to God and to others for God’s sake.
That others may be chosen and I set aside…
That others may be praised and I unnoticed…
That others may be preferred to me in everything.
These are powerful, humbling and crucial words for all of us but, around here, particularly for my two teenagers. I believe humility comes in many forms and has multiple meanings at different phases in life. We don’t always make the team. We won’t be invited to every party. We can’t always be our favorite teacher’s favorite – or any teacher’s favorite. Not everyone will like us. And this is all okay. Putting others first, and celebrating the wins of others, is often immensely more rewarding than being first or winning ourself.
I pray that my boys pray for humility, and I pray on their behalf.
