Sometimes the best projects happen by accident. A few months back, I stumbled on an old Tiger Chew canister in a little junk shop. I didn’t know what I’d do with it, but it felt perfectly “Auburn,” so I tucked it into John’s Easter basket. You can barely spot it peeking out in the photo on the right.

And then… it sat. On his desk. For months.
Fast forward to just before his big move into his first apartment for sophomore year, when I suddenly got a bee in my bonnet: that canister should be a lamp.
With Honey’s help, the transformation took all of five minutes. He drilled a small hole in the lid and another at the bottom of the backside. I used a simple lamp conversion kit to wire it up, then filled the canister with some rocks I’d once bought to weigh down balloons for homecoming and prom events (finally, a second life!). The finishing touch was a clean drum shade that made the whole thing look pulled together.

The result? A sturdy, stylish bedside lamp that’s as unique as it is practical. It looks fantastic in John’s new room and, best of all, makes for quite the conversation starter – the perfect touch for a young man settling into his first apartment.
I had hoped to do a full tour today but ran out of time!!
