While sheltering at home, I read The Giver by Lois Lowry and savored every word on every page. What an amazing book!!
While it seems to be very well known, it never crossed my radar until it was assigned to John as required reading a few months ago. He said it was the best book he’s read since Harry Potter. (Just don’t put too much stock in his book recommendations seeing as he’s only read a couple since fourth grade.) Still, it was one he talked about daily while reading and studying in class so I knew I had to dive in.
The Giver, the 1994 Newbery Medal winner, has become one of the most influential novels of our time. The haunting story centers on twelve-year-old Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community.
I highly recommend The Giver and can’t wait to read the next three and watch the movie. As always, be sure to share what’s on your bedside!
