Learning Sourdough!

I set off on January 1 wanting to master two new things this year – mahjong and sourdough. As we reach the end of q1, I’m feeling good about both. While mahjong is a project that’s just mine, Whit is along for the sourdough journey!

My dear friend NF’s daughter gave me the starter (when we met to play mahjong, no less.) She’s in high school, by the way, and I just love that she’s an accomplished bread maker already. She sent instructions for feeding.

Whit and I fed the thing daily for a week before we had a chance to make bread. We legitimately spent all day one Saturday on it, only to have the puppies get our fully risen dough before we could bake it.

We tried again, and had pretty decent success for our first baked loaf. We have no idea what happened to our scoring, but the loaf was tasty.

Our last attempt was even better! It was lighter and airier and just divine. A sweet friend gave me the lavender honey for my birthday and it is one of the best things I’ve ever tasted.

I will share a few resources from our brief journey:

At this juncture, I have no advise to offer other than to try something if it interests you! It’s amazing how many things you can learn on the internet. We’re taking our starter out of the fridge tonight for our next loaf!

Have you ever wondered what sits on the upper floor of the majestic Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom? I have vivid memories of staring up at the castle as a child imagining the princess living inside. Of course, back then there was no restaurant that you could visit! Now, this gorgeous space overlooking Fantasyland is… Read More

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day {Cottage Pie for Sunday Supper}

Our St. Patrick’s Day eve Sunday Supper kicked off with cheese and crackers. I always love a chance to use our Happy Everything!  We use the dining room more than ever now that it is our sole sit-down dining space. Even with three of us here I think it is important to gather at the… Read More

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day {Top O’ The Morning Breakfast}

We continued the St. Patrick’s Day festivities over here with a theme breakfast for lunch! Mass and bingo at the senior center took our morning but I promised Whit waffles and waffles he would get! I pulled out all the green, orange and rainbow stops for this little affair! I reuse the same decorative items… Read More

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day {Shamrock Door Hangers}

I got my festive door hangers put up right after Valentine’s Day. It has felt like spring here almost all month, which has been such an unexpected delight. Somehow I misplaced the second Irish bunting. Honey kept telling me he thought we had two, but I insisted there was one. In cases like this, we… Read More
