One of Whit’s best friends celebrated his eleventh birthday today. While I realize birthday celebrations are not mission critical, celebrations are one thing I know how to pull off in a time when I feel a little helpless otherwise. I sent a simple text to rally the troops (ie. moms). The moms then rallied their people (ie. kids) to make signs, posters, party hats and all sorts of amazing decorations for their cars and golf carts. In this process, we learned that Jack wasn’t the only kid in the hood celebrating this weekend, so we added two more stops to the plan.
And, today at 1 PM, we pulled out of the driveway blaring Happy Birthday music, honking the horn and cheering!
As I drove the winding streets of my neighborhood, I was brought to tears. There were so many families out with the windows rolled down, streamers flying, balloons tied on and horns honking. We slowed down at each house, waved and sent our wishes to the birthday kids.
It didn’t cost a dime yet the smiles were worth a mint. And it felt so good to go out and see our people, even if from a distance.
As the birthday boy’s mom said, “birthdays are not about presents, cakes and extravagant parties, but a chance to give thanks for LIFE.”
